What is recommended for a 9 speed AM/XC set up for rear deraulier. Long, Med or Short?

How many chainrings up front? Typically you want the shortest you can run smoothly, which is a medium for most setups.

I run a 34T single ring up front and a 9 speed 11 - 36 Casette in the rear.

full suspension or hardtail? if full - what frame is it?

fwiw - i run a 1x9 on my sx. 12-36 cassette, but i can get away with a short cage derailler. i did make sure it fit and wouldn't snap a chain under full compression.

you might be able to run short cage, if not a med cage. only bike i run a long cage on is my xc bike b/c it has a triple front setup.
