So my question is-- will a short cage work with a 32 or 34 tooth cog? My son wants one (short cage) on his bike for clearance, and wants the largest cog possible for climbing (when that happens).

Cage length has more to do with chain wrap capacity than biggest cog size.

If he is running a single ring, it should be ok. Two rings maybe, 3 probably not.
