Our Governor & our mayor think so:
CCCP.com
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (AP) -- Gov. Bill Owens and Mayor Lionel Rivera declined to extend an official welcome to the Atheist Alliance for its national convention this weekend, and attendees said they felt slighted.
what were they thinking by having a convention Easter weekend in this christian hotbed town?

anyone else think the timing [of the athiest convention] is in poor taste?

Wait... Atheists are organized? Do they open and close their meetings with some sort of uplifting message? Do they donate 5-10% of their pay to this organization?

Personally I don't think they would have recieved the coverage on cnn if they had shown up in San Francisco. But they planned it for Co. Springs on Easter weekend hoping the the city fathers would give them a cool reception. Boosts their buzz factor.

If I'm not mistaken Colorado Springs is home to some very conservative/christian social activist organizations.

It's akin to Fred Phelps and his whackos having a convention in San Francisco during gay pride week. Will generate a lot of coverage that they wouldn't otherwise receive.

Not trying to dis the athiests, just a well played political hand.

As the :monkey: 's token fundamental Christian let me add something.

I heard a Christian author say something to the effect, "why get all riled up about what the "world" (ie non-Christians) are doing or not doing? They (the world) don't know (for lack of a better term) know any better so why do we expect them to act like Christians?"

Two things: Personally I think Christians spend WAY TOO MUCH TIME being "activist's" on things like gays and stuff like that. Instead (and this goes with my second point) all that "energy" should be focused on reaching out to those groups and loving them as Jesus loved us.

Second point: who did Jesus get all fired up and mad at? The religious and holier than thou club. Who did they "marginalize" the sick and poor and stuff like that. Who is the "holier than thou" club marginalizing today? Gays, people with AIDS, unwed mothers wanting abortions etc.

I truly believe that if the New Testament times were today, Jesus would be hacked at the "modern US church (as a whole)" for how they have treated people.

Anyway..............

i just found this googling your town
Pastor Fred Phelps' Kansas church reportedly has more than 100 members. Less than 20 are expected to arrive in the mid-Hudson Valley for demonstrations.
so it looks like the tyranny of the minority is unlawfully being imposed? Oh, and those 20 protesters are probably being a pain, as well.

i don't see what the problem is.
they're stimulating both your mind & your economy.

Yes and look at the date. It already happened. They are not the only people that have been picketing. Just the most extreme of the bunch.
Oh stimulating my mind and economy. Well my mind is another story but the economy?.......My town already has more tourists than it knows what to do with. Give up your not going to convince me these idiots are doing good. They teach and spread hate. That is not a good way to do things. They taunt until you attack them then they sue!( ahh the teaching of our lord) give me a break.

Agreed. As a Christian, every time something is brought up in the news, I want to dig a hole and jump in it.
So much focus and energy is put on all the wrong stuff.
And as far as alot of Churches go, Jesus needs to come back and flip over a whole ton of tables.;)

I'm sorry if I'm sounding like a narrow minded prick. I just believe in letting people do as people do. and i don't think these groups are going about this in a good way by teaching hate. I think we both agree that "Instead all that energy should be focused on reaching out to those groups and loving them as Jesus loved us". Wouldn't that have a greater effect on peoples hearts and minds than trying to demonize them.

You don't sound like a jerk. It's funny we see Christians saying to people "you have to do this or that". Jesus gave people a choice and didn't hound them if they made the "wrong" choice. We as humans have the freedom to accept or reject all that Bible stuff, per the Bible.

That is my whole point, what better way to evangelize people than to really get "down in the trenches" with them and love them and show them you care, instead of some churchgoer that is fullfilling some sense of "duty" doing their weekly visitation.

Do you get the sense that I get aggravated about this???

Ah, you guys are getting Phelped. Fred’s crew was back in Boise on Thursday with their “God hates fags” signs. They wanted to erect a monument in a local park declaring Mathew Sheppard went to Hell for being gay.

End result was the City Council had to move our Ten Commandments Monument off public property in order NOT TO BE SUED BY THE CHRISTIANS. They told Phelps thanks for coming, enjoy the visit and go home. However, the issue fouled the waters and polarized groups who had been getting along quite well until Fred Phelps showed up with his agenda of hatred. It was good theater and the taxpayers ate a bunch of overtime pay for city employees.

So who funds those toothless inbred nutjobs to go messing around in communities they don’t live in?

Yeah, its definitely sucks that all Christians are lumped together with extremist groups like Phelps' crew. When people place judgement on one particular sin, or judge anyone for that matter, that is a sin in and of itself. All sins are equal, and everyone commits them. Get over yourselves, you're just as worthless and undeserving as the rest of us.

And what makes him anymore qualified to ponficate about life than say any of the ancient Hebrew writers of the Scriptures?

From most of the anti-Christian point of view it seems their main argument regarding the Bible is that it is written by man and man if falliable. Both writers tackle the philisophical life issues.

Is Nietzsche infalliable, or is it just that he doesn't talk about God that makes him more "credible".

Not to start a raging debate or anything, but I find that point of view interesting.
