On my D40 there is no way to check my shutter actuations. I here that there is a 3rd party download that will show it in the metadata. It is only available on windows. Does anyone know a mac application or willing to check how many actuations I have on my camera?

not sure how Nikons work, but for Canons i think that only the 1 series allows owners to explicitly check shutter count.

what i do is to manage my image filenames serially, and to use the same cards w/ the same bodies. that gives me a pretty good idea.

Ya you can sort of guess at them from some of the photo info, but only the 1d bodies allow you to check actual shutter counts. They have a shutter with some fancy bits built in that keep track of it. Technically only canon is supposed to be able to check it during maintenance, but cancount software will do it quite well.
