Is there any way to aviod pedaling a 7 inch travel bike to the top? I've never ridden down there but I've been meaning to check it out.

You could walk.
I don't think any of the fireroads get you close to the top, besides that, I've never see the gates to most of those roads open.

Takes about an hour to push up. You can still pedal much of it if you have low gears. A big bike isn't needed though. Trailbike or beefy HT is perfect.
