Is tubeless worth the extra cash? Worth the extra weight?

I've never even considered a tubeless system, until recently. Some of the XC bikes I'm looking at have tubeless setups.

Seems to me that the only advantage is the ability to run lower pressures.

The extra weight? That's the point man, it's lighter, NOT heavier. Yes the rim is a tad heavier, but you have to take into account you don't have a tube.

Lower weight and lower tire pressure and less flats are the advantages. I'd try the Crossmax XL's for XC stuff, but I'd stay away from the CrossRocs or whatever they're called; i've seen too many fall apart from hard riding.

My Jekyll came with tubeless. I don't know if I would have bothered to try it otherwise. I like it though. I've done quite a few races, tons of rides, dirt jumping, even a day of ski lift runs, and never had one flat. I can't even count how many people I've passed on race courses while they fix flats, as well as times I've waited on trail rides for buddies fixing flats. For me, they've worked as advertised :)

I put some Crossmax UST's on my Cannondale about 2 seasons ago, replacing some light, tough but flexy Spinergy SPOX wheels. The Crossmax's sure feel like the roll easier and have more traction and cush. I've had an incredible run of good luck with them (knock on head) and have gone about 800 miles without a single flat. The tires are a bit worn now and the sidewalls have little creases from flexing, but they still hold air. The tubies on my Ellsworth still get flats at the same rate - about 1 or 2 a month, so I know my riding habits haven't changed to account for the lack of flats.
