My stock drivetrain is as follows:
Chainrings: 22t/32t/42t (generic)
Cassette: Shimano HG-50, 8 speed, 11-32t
Chain: Shimano IG-31
Shifters: Shimano Altus (but it is a crappy brake lever/shifter combo)
I just bought a BlackSpire Mono Veloce 34t ring for my single ring setup. Im getting new levers and new shifters but Im not sure If I have to stay 8 speed or if I can go 9 speed. Heres where Im confused. If you go to Jenson and look at the BlackSpire ring halfway through the page it says "For best results, use an 8 speed chain." Do I "have" to use an 8 speed chain? I thought chain rings can use either 8 or 9 speed chains/cassettes? The reason why I ask is because I really want SRAM x.7 trigger shifters but if I buy those, I need to get a 9 speed cassette and a 9 speed chain. But if I do that, I need to make sure the 9 speed cassette and chain will work with the BlackSpire ring. Compatability issues?
