I am by no stretch a noob when it comes to mountain biking but I have been thinking of switcing it up at my local single track with a new rig. I have had many trail bikes and most of the stuff around me is climbing except for one or two different trail groups. I know there are benefits to riding a single speed for training purposes but can you get the gearing to a point where you can climb and ride and still have fun? Just wondering. I think it will either be this or a Fatbike to tool around on so just wanted to get peoples thoughts on single speeds and what kind of gearing am I looking to get for the type of terrain i ride.

By having a rigid singlespeed you will learn to climb better, How to maximize your momentum, and how to pick better lines. As for gearing, I assume you are looking a 29er, I would start with a 32/18 and go up/down from there.
