I bought a surly 1+1 rear wheel and put on it a shimano 18 tooth freewheel. It seems that the spacing between the teeth is different then that of the standard mtb chain and chainrings since the old mtb chain does not fit the freewheel. Do I now need to buy a differnt size chain and front chainring ? If so, what size and where should I get it from to be sure I get the right size/spacing?

Thanks! JT

There shouldn't be a difference. The only thing is, were you trying to use a really old chain on it? If so, the chain will have stretched a fair bit, and won't fit on the cogs.

Hope that's of some use!

The freewheel IS standard size, but your chain and chainring are VERY worn. Replace them with new ones. For an SS I recommend a BMX chain and ring... cheaper and more durable than the stuff for multi-speed bikes.

Splendid! Who would have thought that the 5 year old chain would not fit the brand spanking new cog? Thanks!
