Heres the dillyo y'all... I want to make my 02 Balfa MM into a single speed. Hopefully the cheapest way as possible;) Heres the prob, I'm running Kooka cranks at the moment and I dunno if i'd be able to run a single speed like that with MTB gear's or would I need to get BMX cranks etc... Anyways, let me know your thoughts.

The absolute cheapest way is to:
1. pick up a bunch of plastic cassette spacers and short chainring bolts at the shop.
2. remove all your cogs except the 16t, and fill in the rest of the cassette with spacers on both sides so that the 16t lines up with your middle ring.
3. remove enough links from your chain that the horizontal drops can take up the slack and have the hub positioned where you want it.

RIDE!

if you want to get a little more expensive use DX cogs (no ramps), a BMX chain, and a BMX/DH chainring. You can also use a bashguard and regular length chainring bolts instead of the shorter ones and just a single ring.

if you want to get really expensive, buy yourself a Chris King SS cassette rear hub...

http://www.singlespeedoutlaw.com/issue1/features.shtml#HowTo here is a good basic guide. sheldon brown's site also has some good info.

the chain line and tension are your main tasks. I would eventually go to a bmx cog (4 or 5 $) , 5$ bmx chain and a rampless middle ring. those items are going to be well worth it (you may need a chain tensioner) . your cranks are fine to use for single. start with the 2:1 gear ratio. 32/16 , 34/17 etc.
