The UAE purchased the UK company that currently operates, but does not own, the ports. The ports belong to the US. Do you think the deal would go through if Iran bought the UK company, regardless of price?
Again, it's a different issue. We regard Iran as a hostile state, so any commerce they conduct in the US is going to be restricted or monitored. We don't regard the UAE as a hostile state, so why should they be held to different standards than any other friendly nation? Any friendly government (or multinational corporation) could have bought the terminals... the UAE didn't have to do any insider deals, they just had to bid the highest.

This is strictly a political issue and not a security issue.

I think old W will be ok on this one... and succeed in making the Dims look like racists...

Oh dear N8.

Bloomberg:
Assurances

U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said the agreement includes provisions intended to enhance port security.

``The United States government did request specific assurances from the parties involved in this transaction,'' Gonzales said on CNBC. ``Those assurances have been given.''

He didn't give specifics. The Associated Press, citing documents obtained by the wire service, reported that DP World agreed to cooperate with U.S. investigations and reveal records on demand about ``foreign operational direction'' of its business. The agreement doesn't force the company to keep copies of business records on U.S. soil, where they would be subject to court orders, the AP reported.

The administration didn't anticipate the uproar the sale caused. The transaction was examined for security concerns and not for its political impact, McClellan said.

No Political Review

``I don't think anybody during this process was looking at it in any way other than the national security standpoint,'' McClellan said yesterday. The administration ``should have been briefing members of Congress sooner, given all the attention that has been focused on this.''

Let's talk about the Republican fallout for just a second. Bush is not running for anything again, but he knows he wants to maintain the house, wants to maintain the majority in the House and Senate. This is an election year. If you take a look at all these Republicans opposing Bush, what are they doing? They're establishing independence, they are illustrating they're not sycophants, they're illustrating they have their own minds.

They are illustrating that they can't be whipped into shape by the White House. This will set them up well to campaign when the campaign season heats up later this year. I think this is a possibility of a bunch of rope-a-dopes going on in there. How about the way the president is sounding on this? Oh, man, I wish we would have heard him sound like this on a couple or three other issues, but he's saying, "To hell with you people. You go ahead and pass this; I'm going to veto it. I promise you I'm going to veto it."

I can barely pull my own ass through that line. I haven't gotten past number 3 yet.

I did knock myself unconscious and remove a bunch of skin from my face on number 2 last weekend.

THAT's the kind of thing I need on video. Give me a call before this weekend.

I saw your mug shot on the full face thread, let's just say the picture told a brutal tale.

As for this weekend... I'll probably be stuck behind this f-cking CAD program for most of the weekend (deadline next week), but I think I can pull out for one of the two days. My burner is back together and rideable... I might have to break out some ankle braces and hit it up! I'll give you a ring.

Lot's of misinformation on this topic. DP World is a terminal operator, meaning they perform the loading and unloading of cargo off of thier customers vessels. Probably the biggest change made to the terminals they bought in the US will be to paint the gantry cranes, and put up a bunch of new signs. I work for a "foreign" terminal operator. If everyone is so concerned with security, then they should take a close look at the ILA / ILWU labor.

Well done N8,

That’s exactly the kind of comment I would expect from a blind sighted, half educated, want-a-be politician, such as yourself. Just to clue you in on a couple of things they would’ve never discussed in your debate class, first of all the Bilderberg Group is made up of big-wigs such as Henry A. Kissinger, James D. Wolfensohn - President of The World Bank, Tommaso Padoa-Schioppa - Member of the Executive Board European Central Bank, to name a few. And if you think these guys are getting together once a year to play a game of poker, your highly mistaken. They meet annually with about 50-100 other billionaire elitists to discuss global issues.

See for yourself-
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/3773019.stm

These are some of the richest and most powerful people in the world, getting together to discuss significant global power moves that directly affect all of our lives, and there is absolutely zero media coverage allowed. You tell me if that should be of any importance to us.

As for the Bush family, do a little research on GW’s grandfather, Prescott Bush, you won’t have to be a history major to learn the truth about that old hag. http://www.nhgazette.com/cgi-bin/NHGstore.cgi?user_action=detail&catalogno=NN_Bush_Nazi_2

While your at it, why don’t you enlighten yourself about some of the other dirty little facts of just exactly who was behind the financing of the Nazis. People like Henry Ford, Standard Oil, Bayer Aspirin, etc… do you think Adolf pulled hundreds of millions of dollars out of his ass?

Check out old Henry-

N8, please turn of Fox news, put the clicker down, and take some time to educate yourself on world history and global affairs… rest assure you’ll then know what the hell your talking about when it comes to politics.

I think the word you were previously trying to spell is “Sparky”, but don’t worry I understand how difficult it is, for you straight edge types, to relate to the rest of us.

????
Those are the best quotes you could find?
You realize of course, just about any two quotes put together can be made to sound however you want, right?

For instance.

"There is a steroid problem in Baseball" - Bud Selig

" Baseball is a great sport" - Your dad

Does your dad endorse steroids?

BS, real profound, I commend you on your efforts to post an analogy that would mock what was previously stated, but if you don’t recognize the differences, I’m not even going to attempt to explain them to you.

Maybe someone else hear has the patience to handle this one, possibly an individual with expertise in the field of child development.

Tommy Franks Defends Dubai Ports Deal

2/22/06 | Carl Limbacher

Former CENTCOM commanding general Tommy Franks said Wednesday that the Bush administration was right to approve a deal for a United Arab Emirates-based company to run six major U.S. ports.

"We have more U.S. Navy ships using the port in Dubai, Jebel Ali, than any other port outside the United States," Franks told Fox News Channel's "Hannity & Colmes."

The former Iraq war commander explained U.S. reliance on the Dubai port facility by saying, "We know he difference between an enemy and a friend."

"The Emirates is a friend," Franks aid. "That is the best run port that I've ever seen."

Gen. Franks said the Dubai company had three essential qualities that commend it for the task of running U.S. ports: the capacity to handle the job, the inclination to do it right and security, which he noted "will remain, in any case, in the hands of the United States Coast Guard."

U.S. says money came before Dubai Company sought ports deal

WASHINGTON - The United Arab Emirates gave the Bush administration $100 million to help victims of Hurricane Katrina weeks before a state-owned company there sought U.S. approval for its ports deal.

The White House said Thursday the $100 million for storm victims demonstrates the relationship between the two governments caught in a firestorm over the potential security risks of state-owned Dubai Ports World running significant operations at six major U.S. ports.

The administration said the request for U.S. approval of the $6.8 billion ports deal and the UAE contribution were not related.
