I'm getting a lot better at the Hok skis. Switching to a stiff-sole boot was absolutely critical. Although they say you can use "any boot" with their binding, that's a load of BS, you need a stiff-sole boot for control with such short tails and to snow-plow. I did a test yesterday where I went out and small-stepped on a trail that hadn't been packed in a while and with some cold overnight temps, I was able to ride the trail on my fatbike today. Generally, these put less pressure down than snowshoes and you can't just glide with them if you are trying to get a trail into riding shape...but you can cover a lot more ground faster getting to/from trails with the minimal glide they provide.
