Ive got a Specialized Demo 7 2008.

I have increased the travel to 7.7 inch, following the steps in the specialized owners manual. I now, however want to slacken the head angle as it is quite steep with the 180mm travel forks I'm using. The geometry is already in the slack position using the adjustable shock mounts. I was wondering if I could push the stantions of the fork further through the crowns, effectively making them longer in length. Is this a could idea?

Sure, just don't run out of the tapered area on the fork legs where the triple clamps clamp on to.. Max that thing out. Leave 1/4" of fork legs showing on the very top at the top caps.

Yes, you can adjust the stanchions within the crowns so long as you stay within the limits marked on your fork or indicated in the manual. Raising the crowns will slacken your HTA, but will also raise both the BB and the bar height. All of these changes will have different impacts on the bike handling.

The slack setting ought to put the HTA at about 65 degrees when you get the axle-to-crown (ATC) measurement on the fork similar to that of whatever the bikes used to come with (180mm 66RCV or Totem, I think). Until you're winning world cups, 65 degrees is fairly slack.

Thanks for the help. Yeh, I looked at the owners manual and it says the slack head angle is 65 degrees. I think, however, it is taken with a 200mm travel fork as thats what is says in the manual. Its a Specialized Demo 7/8 frame manual. I did leave some room at the top of the stanchion and kept within the limits of what the fork owners manual specified. Theres probably a little more than 1/4" at the top, I thought i'd be safe. Also I tried to keep the bar height similar by removing some of the spaces underneath the top crown, as I had raised it before because I felt that it was too low with the zero stack headset.
Thanks again
