I've slacklined for about a year. Learning to walk is the most difficult part. After that everything that doesnt involve jumping comes easily. I'm working on jumping now. The key is not to rush it and don't try to start out on a super long line. Keep the line less than 20 feet to start, then once you get the basics add some distance. Its all about your center of balance. slacklineexpress.com is where I bought all my stuff and they have some pretty helpful stuff on their website for beginners. Happy slacking!!! Also, music helps me alot for some reason. I guess it's the rhythm.

Start by playing the tight rope game on Wii Fit. That game taught my daughter how to balance her bike without the training wheels on.

On any given weekend, there are no less than 20 different groups with lines set up between trees in the park. Would love to give it a try sometime.

I've tried it a few times. I'm pretty terrible, but it's fun to mess around with. I've got a couple friends into it.

I'm not very good. But I've got some webbing to set everything up. All you really need is a long length and a short length of webbing and two big locking biners and you can set one up.

A friend of mine has a setup in his Dads old commercial building. Initally we had it set up about 3' off the floor. We worked it up to 8' and now I can't seem to make the last 5' of a 32' line. I cannot figure it out. I just freeze and fall at the finish. Very frustrating! When it was 3' of the ground I could make it no problem. His 12 year old sister can practically dance on the thing. Quite amazing to watch actually. Fun stuff. I enjoy it very much.

Oh wow. Think I could get someone at the climbing shop to show me how to set this up myself and it be way cheaper? My girls would love this.
Kits are only like $40. And that includes the ratchet which is a must have if you don't plan on having 5 guys with you to tighten it. I put my kit together with a ratchet, 50 ft of webbing and a cam strap I already had for about $30. But if you need to buy everything for it it would be about the same price to get a kit.

Tightrope walking. Can't we just call it what it is?

This, on the other hand, deserves a cool name.

 So much stupid in one post...

Slacklining - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia@@AMEPARAM@@/wiki/File:Cambridgeslackerssaf40.jpg" class="image"><img alt="" src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/e0/Cambridgeslackerssaf40.jpg/300px-Cambridgeslackerssaf40.jpg"@@AMEPARAM@@commons/thumb/e/e0/Cambridgeslackerssaf40.jpg/300px-Cambridgeslackerssaf40.jpg

While rope walking has been around in one manner or another for thousands of years, the origins of modern day slacklining are generally attributed to a pair of rock climbers[citation needed] living in Yosemite Valley, California, in the early 1980s. Adam Grosowsky and Jeff Ellington started their walking on loose chains and cables alongside parking lots, and over time progressed to stringing up their climbing webbing and walking it. The sport blossomed from there among climbers in the valley, and then branched out elsewhere all over the world.

lol at a slack line "kit" all you kneed is old retired webbing and carabiners.

If you set it up right it will "ratchet" on it's own and only need 2 or 3 people, tops, to set it up.

where is this magic retired webbing? Nursing homes for nylon straps or assisted webbing facilities? But seriously, where do you get that crap local?

I like having my own yard as a playground for my kids. We've got all sorts of fun stuff around the house to keep them entertained and active. This would be one more. :thumb:

Im pretty sure REI sells tubular webbing in the climbing dept. As for retired webbing I have no idea, I'm not sure where someone would use long stretches of it for anything besides slacklining. In my climbing gear the only thing I use webbing for is slings and those are no more than 5'. Also anything that's retired, is retired for a reason, its up to you if you want to put 1000lbs of tension on worn out webbing but keep in mind how painful it will be when it breaks

edit: here it is: http://www.rei.com/product/737298

34 cents a foot or 30 ft for $12.45

I've got 3 commercial grade bulldozer tie downs that my old contractor left here at the house. I'm thinking they're the same thing. Anyone want to warn a hillybilly if I'm deluded.

your right! most tie downs are going to be flat webbing instead of tubular. Regular webbing will curl up under tension. Although if this is just for your kids you might be able to have it loose enough to keep it flat. Also if its the kind of tie downs Im thinking of its probably 2'' webbing instead of 1'' which isn't necessarily a bad thing for kids and beginners. good luck! :thumb:

Here is the exact same thing except it comes with purpose built tree slings which make setup 10x easier (you don't have to loop your mainline around the trees) and it comes without all the namebadging and from a much more reputable company. All for a whopping 1 cent more.

Don't worry about the name badging, it rubs right off all over your hands the first time you set it up.

We have been having a blast with ours. Spent five hours on it a couple of days ago and almost made it all the way across by the end of the day. It is amzing what it does for balance and core strength.
