Hey yo wassup? Looking for DH'ers that have ridden there.
I checked all the photos on the site, and am definitely going
this year. Is it as cool as it seems to be in the pictures?
Any Rochester monkeys been there? If so, how did you
get there and where did you stay? How 'bout other
trails in the area? I could make a week out of it.....
TIA,
Tim :help:

The place is a blast. I went last year, I strongly recommend you stay in or as close to the Village as possible, it makes everything so convenient.

A full week might be pushing it. I was there for 3 full days and that felt right. However I did not go off the mountain.

We were a group from the Brooklyn Bike Riders who went to Snowshoe last year and we had a small condo in the village which was great. Fun trails and a lot of good people down there. We were there in May and I think the trails on both side of the mountain has been improved even more since then. I hope to make another trip there in 2005.

One thing don't eat beans for lunch just before you go riding again.

I rode snowshoe every weekend for a month (till i went on a trip) then a few times in august last year. I love it out their the park although some people say it's not "flowy" is in my opinion. I find the trails in the park a lot like the north shore (i rode there so don't give me ****) in terms of the tightness and technical part. A few of the trails in the park once you learned how to ride it you could link it up good and rail it nicely. The big side of the mountain will see additions this year and i'm glad as it has tons of elevation and some nice terrain out there.

Definetly check it out i recommend getting a few friends together on a place in the village. Opening weekend was the best for me as i rode, went back to our place right across about 200 yards from the lift and hopped in the hot tube...**** wait oh i did that at lunch time then went and rode more.

I agree, I had a kick ass time there last summer!

good news, the trails did vastly improve through the summer last year, they were maintained and always had new stuff popping up.

This year, there are even more dedicated riders living at the resort, and this will only mean more hands and minds to build, it can only get better!

if you ride trails, a.k.a. XC there are tons of great trail rides as well

I went down there for a wekeend last year to FR.
New stuff is super fun.
The terrain is top notch.
Some very challenging trails.

Hulk and some of the other guys who run the DH posts here on RM maybe they have some up to date pictures and can tell a little more about 2005?

We had a great time there last year, we went on Memorial Day weekend which I think was the first weekend the freeride park was open. The freeride trails were pretty "fresh" (meaning wet roots, mud, etc) and a that made them harder to "flow", but the stunts were all awesome. They don't look too hard in the pictures but they were much better in person.

We also spent a day doing DH runs on the other side of the mountain, which was fun but STUPID muddy, the bottom half of the courses were basically unrideable. The shuttle bus broke down on one of our runs too, that SUCKED hardcore but I suppose that sort of thing happens.

Overall I wish we had gone later in the year when the trails were worn in a bit better and things were dried out a bit. Definitely I recommend riding there! As far as where to stay, we had a big group so we rented a big house right on the mountain. The expert/pro DH course actually crossed the road right by the house we stayed in.

A word of advice, when we went we stayed at the bottom of the mountain becuase it was cheaper. If we were to do it again, (which we are definately going to) I would stay at the top of the mountain, and spend the extra $$. It'd be so much more convienent.

That's what we though, too. First trip we stayed at the bottom, but there's a cheap ski lodge at the top -- second trip three of us stayed there two nights for like $80 total!

Snowshoe is the gnarness. It's so fun, and the mountain is all about the DH/FR guys. They have a full service bike shop with a number of replacement parts, and tons of gear. As mobius said, the park can be tight, steep, rocky, and rooty. Add in a fair bit of mud, and you've got yourself a great time! The DH side is equally fun, but a bit slippery when muddy. Hit it on a relatively dry day and it's fast! There are a number of hotels in the village, with a new one being constructed for next year. They are bike friendly, with storage, but we usually stash them in our rooms. The hotel staff don't seem to mind. If you plan on hitting Snowshoe frequently, a season pass will more than pay for itself. Next year will be hella sweet, plans have been made for an A-Line type trail on the DH side of the mountain, as well as additions to the bike park. I should be up there for a few months in the summer, see you guys on the lift!

I heard that from the main guy as well when I was there. It should be interesting to start hearing about the actual construction though. I doubt something like that could happen over night, but then again I have never had the opportunity to cut trail with heavy equipment

YES YES YES

you heard it here first people. all the rumors are true. SNOWSHOE IS SICK.

if the only thing you've ridden are the downhill (NORBA) courses, then i strongly suggest you come back this summer and check out the bike park. also, for everyone who is thinking everything will be the same as it was next year...think again. more and more trails are on the way.

Yeah we went I-90 to I-79 through Pittsburgh. It was a long ass drive, like 10 hours. Once you get off 79, you're in the sticks and it just takes forever on those twisty ass roads. Then just when you think you're there, you have another 45 minutes driving up to the top :D

OK maybe I exaggerated :D It seemed like a long time. It was just wierd because the resort is at the top of the mountain instead of the bottom like everywhere else.

All but one of the stunts are easy. The only hard on is on some trail in the park (all the park trails are named letters so i forgot which one it was). Anyway it goes up a steep narrow a frame between two rally close trees then you can go the hi-way or the lo-way. Pretty hard when your tires are covered in mud. The rest are just a ton of fun. I recommend going as often as possible because it is one of the better places in the southeast mid-atlantic area.

Forgot to ask, does anyone know if they are going to run the lift on the Cupp run side this year instead of the shuttle? That would pretty much make the mountain a no compromise area.

I can do it in 3 hrs from my driveway. I take I-79 south to exit 99 elkins, from Elkins its about 45 miles to the base of the mountain. The drive to the top is 6 miles from base to village. It shouldn't take more than 15 minutes.

If you are planning a trip down there consider August 18-21, thats NORBA National weekend this year. I can almost guarantee the conditions will be dry, late in the summer is best time to go there. If you can, maybe come like 2 days early to ride the trails without worrying about crowds.

We wish but I doubt its gonna happen. That's a Ferrari of a chairlift, and it costs about the same to run it. Race's they can justify the cost, but they need many more riders on the Western Territory to foot the bill. Now if they could see a huge influx of riders on non-race days, then Snowshoe would be go. We're lucky that the Ballhooter lift is a multipurpose lift, it services the lake activities at the base, so it's not a big deal to run it for the bike park.

man they need that other lift to get running, that would be so huge :thumb: .

So does anyone know exactly what the plans are going to be for the bike park, i rode there a bunch this past summer and what is the crew planning to put in for this year. I loved riding there and the trails were top notch, but there needs to be some more flowly type stuff, such as an A-Line style trail, how about a slopestyle type course (whistler esque), i cant see one of those being that tough to build....I dunno i real stoked on riding there this summer, and cant wait to see what the future holds.

here are some shots from when we were down there...

From my understanding dave huber mentioned to me that they will be putting more trails over there with natural and built features hopefully. With that said i think if they did they could open that side but they would need more regular rider base. The fact its in the middle of no where in WVA doesn't help that but its not that bad of a drive. I drove 4 hrs from richmond, va to stay the weekend and drove back sundays.

there is like 6 inches of snow outside and those pics are sweet! Come on Summer!

Mattoid says plaid helps you stay balanced. Seems like that stunt was pretty popular so maybe more stunts of that nature would be sweet!

I just ran across this photo of me, today on the vtfreeride site..

good times...

that's another thing that makes it the best 4-season (basically) resort in the mid-atlantic. resorts centered at the bottom of the mountain are lame

READ: the Western Express lift on the Western Territory is always run for about a month near the end of the season. i think it's usually the majority of september or october.

more and more trails will be built on the eastern side of the mountain where the bike park currently is. we'll probably be starting work a little earlier than expected because the weather all winter has been fairly warm so it'll either reach spring very soon or stay winter for a while longer with temps reaching upwards of 55 degrees and sunny as the beach (like it was today). anyone else with questions feel free to contact myself,Hulkamaniac, banche, stoneysnake or Simms because we all live at the mountain.
