At a $500/weekend budget -- which you can cut by camping -- some options way outside the box begin to emerge:

1. Fly to Whistler for weekend:
cheap airtix: $300 r/t DC-Van
two days at Whistler: US$50 (NSMB brocard gives discount)
train/bus to Whistler village: $x
hostel: US$18 per night
Or, rent pickup at Van airport and ride N Shore. Hostels in Van very good.
Avoid air surcharge by breaking bike down into two normal suitcases, but can be a problem for some bikes.

2. Fly to Montreal on cheap tik, rent car, and ride Bromont. $15/day lift, maybe less. Superb resort.

3. Diablo: If you're near DC area, it is same distance to SS and Diablo. If you drive the back way, up 78, there are very cheap hotels on the freeway, unlike NJ. Depending on where you're coming from time is just a little longer as turnpike but no tolls.

4. Fly to European resorts - airtix coming down. The Brit DHers fly to France for DH holidays quite a bit. Tons of sites and package deals to gather ideas....

So which will it be for you this season??? Given the rate increases outlined in the "Snowshoe Update" post, is anyone else having to search out alternatives for this year???

I dropped nearly $300 a weekend to ride at Snowshoe last year (travel, race fees, lodging, food, beer, etc) and it's looking to escalate to well over $500 a weekend if all indications are correct from the "update" post.

Thoughts, opinions, ideas, any other updates from Snowshoe???
