So have you received your selective service notice yet?

I guess now that your Christian Crusader has just about won the election, the selective service letters should hit the mailboxes tomorrow. I don't know whether to feel sorry for you guys or just shake my head. Oh well, it's not my problem until Dubya wants to save some cash and starts looking for a target with a shorter commute.

If you really think those letters will come in the next, say, 50 years, you are mistaken. Am I the only one that remembers Vietnam?

Enacting a draft with Selective Service would be political suicide. So instead, the great Congresspeople of the USA have to create a loophole, and a different kind of draft. One of these is the “Stop Loss Program,” a scheme to force soldiers to remain in the service after their contractual obligation has been fulfilled. So basically GIs who served their time, are getting pulled back in.

Charlie Rangel. That guy is an idiot too. He always gets his balls handed back to him by Sean Hannity. You'd think he'd learn not to go on there.

Ya, it would be political suicide. Dubya seems strangely invulnerable to that, unfortunately. Anyway, genocide is more his style.

Would you all smack your heads against the nearest solid object and wake up. I am so sick of hearing the arguement that Bush will reenact the draft... IT ISNT GONNA HAPPEN!

Political scare on the part of liberals.

He's got his second term locked, a third is not an option, so what difference does it make? Might as well roll out the nukes.

Go look at the way Bush used to talk before he was elected President. Then look at the what he's done with regards to changing the reason for invading Iraq, or the changing rationale for tax cuts.

You think it's a coincidence that many people don't believe the President?

Hey Pluto,

where the hell was WWU at nationals, huh?

Without the $$ to come:( our budget stinks, this year we managed to get a fairly good sized amount from the state but with a combined road and mountain team over 50+ riders racing almost every weekend from March through the summer months, we just didn't have the money to send riders, nor a very strong group to send. We decided to wait until 2005 to hopefully attend rather then dip into the Campus Recreation "uh oh we dont have money" fund. If we had asked for that money this year we wouldn't get it next year and we really would have only had 4 or 5 riders to send this year.

Hopefully something will be a bit closer to us, cross country travel costs way too friggin much for college students.

Not to derail completely,

But word on the street is that it will be back at the same place for next year. Only a 7 hour drive for me. I was looking for you guys out there, but never did see you all. Next year though...

I was actually really curious about this whole stop loss thing, and really wish the media had given a better explanation of it. I spoke with a coworker who was in the army and he told me that the people being pulled into service under the stop loss order have not finished their service with the US military. The standard length of service is 8 years and some people opt to serve thier last few years in the ready reserves. While in that position they can be called up at any time just like any other reserve troops. So, if he is correct, these guys are not being forced into service. They are simply finishing their agreed upon service time.

you guys might want to research this crap before you go whining about it. an enlistment in the military is for 8 years. it can be anywhere from 2-5 years of active service and the remainder of the 8 years is considered inactive service. it's in your contract when you sign up, it IS explained fully. the stop loss is just "activating" the full length of the contract. all you pu$$ies are so worried about actually having to pay your dues, get over it....i'm sure there are plenty of willing citizens that will gladly take your place so that you can go on living your happy little lives of blissful ignorance.

Not technically, you're wrong and Tenchiro is correct. You don't actually elect the President, you realize.

The Electors do. Are they going to vote for Kerry instead of Bush? No, but that still doesn't make you right.

Before you call people stupid, you should know a little bit about what you are talking about.

Have the Electors voted yet? Go back and read Tenchiro's post. You should have paid more attention in civics class.

But what could happen is if Bush did something crazy before then, such as enact a draft. Electors who would cast a vote for Bush, could shed them for say McCain or another republican. If say 23 of them did so, Kerry would be the new President or in order to prevent that, the rest of the Electors could also follow suit to insure that a Republican keep the office and we could have McCain as the new president for example.

Now, while I am sure this would never happen, it legally could and that is why hte current administration will keep it on the down low unitl after December 13th (I think it is that date).

Heres my take on the whole draft thing:

I dont think the Bush administration has been secretly planning anything, but I do see the potential for a draft down the road. I read some articles a while back (I just searched for them and came up blank) that quoted high ranking military officials indicating that they were running out of man power. Couple this with the fact that deaths in Iraq are on the rise, world political, ideological and religious rifts are growing day by day and you have a scary senario indeed.

Ok...If ANYONE EVER reenacted the draft. They deserve political suicide.
Don't get me wrong.
But I don't believe IMO that it will ever happen.
And until it does, this is a moot point. Right??

Oh I don't know... if the world was in a war like WWII then the draft would have to be reinstated.

Quit whining about the draft.

If this country needs you, you'd better help out. Bush was elected fair and square (cant argue this time) so what he does is what the American people voted for. You are obligated as citizens to defend those interests. If you dont like it, sit in jail. Period.

That's not the issue.

The issue is an ignoramus coming on here and missing the point completely, while responding to Tenchiro's post without any facts and asserting he's completely correct.
