so, how would you bring other countries to the table?

If you're bush, you would be viewed as "we got a lot of boys dying over there; wanna give us some of yours?"

if you're kerry, you'd have to ask to join the wrong war in the wrong place at the wrong time.

seems to me like it wouldn't be appropriate/realistic for either of them to ask, for at least the reasons i've inferred. So, option 3: "shut up & let us win" seems to be the best (least worst) card to play.

thoughts?

I'd think there would need to be some incentive for other states to get involved. It will cost them in terms of military casualities and money. The best approach I can think of is to turn the whole thing over to the UN and support a UN administration & peace keeping force pending free elections.

You can't really blame other countries for not wanting to get involved in the mess, especially if it remains under US overall control.

And yeah, VB was an insensitive clod there.

Frankly, I'm surprised more states aren't involved. They can give their troops experience... an inexperienced military is fvcked. And it's not like those countries will look bad to others... they can just claim that US bullied 'em into it.

Uh yeah, lets send them to war to practice war... in case we need to send them to war again... next time America invades somewhere thousands of miles away from us... thus putting our previously ignored nation smack in the middle of terrorist radar.

It's a compelling argument, I'll give you that.

If we needed more countries to help us, we probably should have gone into this another way. Can't really look around and ask everyone else for a hand after bragging, blustering, spurning other nations' opinions, and charging right on in alone.

I'm not saying we necessarily even need other countries to help us here...but it's hypocritical to expect, or even ask for, help at this point. Plus, I can't think of any incentive to get other countries to enter the political and military deathtrap we've created...and honestly, who's going to give us troops in quantity and quality that will really matter?

The American public loves a good few weeks of aerial bombing footage, briefings by generals on TV, and a big patriotic send-off to the boys, but we'll see if we have the stomach to fight an actual war. The 'high intensity fight' that ended so long ago was just the prelude to the real conflict. Now everyone's squirming to get out, and no one's willing to take the actions that would really pacify the country. People will hem and haw about how it's the 'media' or other countries' faults that we can't escalate the fight for fear of collateral damage and civilian deaths...but we knew that going in to this, so it's useless whining. If our leadership didn't forsee this being a problem... (insert conclusion here).

It is my take that the vast majority of people, including our leadership, assumed it would be a quick campaign consisting of some bombing followed by parades of American tanks being covered in flowers from adoring Iraqis.

it would have been quicker w/ a true shock & awe campaign, but instead they/we did a 1/2 measure. I don't know...maybe we ran out of viable targets. There should be no shock & awe that this is not how to fight a war. Can we just man up & do the ugly work that needs to be done?

I think if we want other countries to help, we should give out stamps like at Subway. Except we could call them AmeriPoints BonusCash instead of Subway stamps. And you would get full on footlongs for a card of stamps not just a 6 incher.

we need to win hearts & minds.

alternatively, we can take the ann coulter approach & invade the countries (check), kill their leaders (check) & convert them to christianity (pending).

So, ethnic cleansing then?

Unless you can figure out a better way to spiritually rape people...

"ethnic cleansing" looks bad on the resume. Let's call it something else. How 'bout another proxy-war? Something with a "hole in the sheet". That should accomodate the spritual raping to which you referred.

A 'true' shock an awe? You mean we should have killed all the civilians so they couldn't rise up and oppose the invasion?

So your basic answer is 'kill em all'. WooHoo. Start a war on terror, invade the wrong country, and then when the citizens get pissed at you and you can't handle it, just kill all of them? Well, actually in this case Rummy is one step better than you - he just wants to run away now.

so i shan't
