...and it was damn expensive! I can't get out of there without dropping at least $100  I'm going to go to a diet of dirt and bark.....at least quality dirt is still reasonable in price

organic milk
steak that wasn't on sale
booze
bulk trail mix

FAIL

I don't buy organic, don't eat red meat, don't drink and I buy granola bars. I was speaking more to vegetables, fruits, and bread

Intentional?

You ever seen a cow up close? They are just begging to be eaten!

Damn... now I also want steak for dinner.
It's because of the cost; around here pork and chicken are considerably cheaper than beef. I'm glad I could make everyone hungry :)

Eat fruit/vegetables that are in season. It drops the price usually by half.
Also, stores like Safeway have produce that is "good enough" when compared to the Whole Foods of the world. Trader Joe's does not have good produce, but their pre-packaged meals are good and healthy.
Just food for thought.

I've been shopping at Winco; I find I can stretch my dollar the farthest there. Are carrots ever out of season? They have doubled in price over the last several months :( I did get a cantaloupe for .49, I was stoked :)

I do most of my shopping at Trader Joe's, and get fresh items at farmer's markets (I work in a booth at a few of them throughout the bay, so it makes it easy). I spend maybe $100/mo on food, and then leech off of my roommates takeout leftovers. It's kind of weird to live with people that go out to eat for nearly every meal.

I <3 Trader Joe's. Maybe more than life.

If God did not want us to eat animals, he wouldn't have made them out of meat.
One time a vegan told me "if God wanted us to eat meat, it would grow on plants!"

I responded "meat... that grows on a plant? that's a Nobel Prize waiting to happen" :D

in retrospect I wish I had said "well, a skeleton is close enough to a plant"

Interesting article

Also look out for the grocery shrink ray, where the same product costs the same, but you get less of it...

Buy food based on cost/pound. A deal is not a deal unless it's cheap/pound. Also, buy the off label. It is far cheaper and with few exceptions, the taste difference is negligible.

I read that article....I complain a lot, but at least I have the money to buy groceries and gas. I feel bad for the families that don't have the money to keep up with rising grocery and gas prices

Groceries, gas, new bikes...
We can complain all we want, but most of us on here can still fill up their cars and fridges.
