And it looks like made them aware of an error on their website....

Dear Mr. Dahlen:

The AMA Membership Services Department and Sean Maher, AMA director of state affairs, forwarded to me your e-mail message regarding an error you noticed in the state of Washington motorcycle laws. Thanks for writing to us.

You’re right – we made a mistake. Based on your information, I took a look at RCW 46.30.020 and found that motorcycles are specifically excluded from the liability insurance or other financial responsibility requirements of the law.

We’re updating our online information to read “None required per RCW 46.30.020”.

Thanks for bringing this error to our attention; I appreciate your assistance in helping to make our information as accurate as possible.

Sincerely,

Mr. Imre F. Szauter

Government Relations Department
Responding to my letter:

Hello,

I was reviewing your website and looked into my state motorcycle laws. I found one item to be incorrect or misleading. Insurance for motorcycle riders is not required in WA state.

You web site states that WA state motorcyclists require:

"Financial responsibility required. Minimum Limits(25/50/10)."

I found on the WA state website (linked to below) a more precise ruling on the matter.

Washington State Patrol biweekly law review -- mandatory vehicle insurance

OLYMPIA -- At a minimum, every vehicle licensed and registered in Washington State must be covered by liability insurance. Excluded from this requirement are those vehicles defined and licensed as a motorcycle, motor-driven cycle, or a moped.

Revised Code of Washington (RCW) 46.30.020 states in part. "(1)(a) No person may operate a motor vehicle subject to registration under chapter 46.16 RCW in this state unless the person is insured under a motor vehicle liability policy . . ."Proof of motor vehicle insurance must be provided when asked to do so by a law enforcement officer.

Failure to maintain current liability insurance on your vehicle may result in a traffic infraction which carries a fine of $526.

I hope, in an attempt to give correct information to motorcyclists, this piece can be reworded to reflect the states requirements.

Thank you,

Kevin Dahlen

I figured they had forgot about me....or ignored me.

So for anyone ever wondering....it is not required to carry motorcycle insurance in WA state. Hopefully the website will reflect that fact also....

I haven't checked yet.

So you don't have to have any insurance? What happens if you crash into someone or something?

Didn't say it isn't nice to have but the operation of a motorbike/moped/etc does not require liability insurance.

Unlike the requirement of auto liability insurance....wich does not transfer over to a motorcycle.

Yep, that is a requirement of the loan, not the state.

The information on the AMA website stated that minimum insurance was required for riders in WA state.....just like cars. Ins. is a choice here, just like helmets are in other states.

I was just correcting the info so others researching it, and trust the AMA (like NORBA and USA Cycling on steroids) data regarding state laws would be given correct info.
