I think the argument is that by not buying music from a store, that store owner isn't getting your business.
The only shops I've ever seen that depend completely on cd/record sales do so on a niche market such as selling/trading old vinyls and such.
Everything else is either a store for x with a CD section, or a head shop as well.

The entire problem with the music industry is that a guy like Kid Rock got rich making music in the first place...
