I personally run Sennheiser HD-580s (headphones) with my computer. That way I can have things as loud as I want them without bugging everybody else. Plus the accuracy is unmatched by any (and I really do mean ANY) set of computer speakers out there. I really wonder if the ultimate sound system is not a really good set of headphones with a dedicated amp and a quality subwoofer to cover the visceral bass.
As for small 5.1 systems, nothing I have heard comes close the Acoustic Energy AEGO system. It's not cheap, but it sounds great.
