One of my good buddies and former roomates from Santa Barbara just called me with some really bad news. He informed me that one of the people who died in the Piper that went down on the side of Pine mt. in the Los Padres (17mi from SB) this past Weds. night was a buddy of mine named Ian Coulling. Ian was a 24yo good guy who was just really getting his life to a great place after a few years of mishaps. He was just finishing probation for a DUI (barely over the limit and SB hands out DUI's like candy on halloween FWIW). He had been working construction with a general contractor for a few years and was just doing pretty well.
I sold Ian his Kona hardtail when he got a DUI and he was really revved up on riding all around town and on some trails. His girlfriend was with him in the plane and unfortunately she died as well. To top off the whole story, the Pilot (Ian's friend) was a world renowned plastic surgeon who frequently traveled to China and Mexico to perform no-cost surgeries on poor children with permanent disfigurations such as cleft palates, etc. He was also a married father.
Apparently they clipped some tree tops on the summit of big pine and tumbled down the south slope, the plane burned intensely and all three passengers were unrecognizable. It seems as though this fall has been particularly deadly
