So Was the President Lying...???

I think this question needs to be asked:

When the President said to the nation that "the mission was to attack Iraq's nuclear, chemical and biological weapons program," was the president lying?

If so why would he do such a thing? Was it to create a diversion for something else perhaps...???

He intentionally mislead the world to generate support for his action in Iraq... and I don't mind that he did. As for whether it was the right thing to do, only time will tell.

Was the President lying about Iraq's WMD program becoming an imminent when he said:

""And so we had to act and act now. Let me explain why. First, without a strong inspection system, Iraq would be free to retain and begin to rebuild its chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons programs in months, not years."

If he was lying, what would his motivations be?

yes, because while UNMOVIC was frustrated, they were effective in keeping Iraq in check. They would have had to continue their work for probably a few more decades, but they were keeping them in check.

He was "lying" in order to gain support for a mission that his team believes is good for US, Iraq and the world. I tend to agree with that thinking.

N8, do you feel he was totally and completely honest? Do feel that there was zero intention to mislead or persuade?

more simply, "was he being a politician, which all (free) world leaders are?"

I know that and you know that, but I wanted to hear N8's opinion.

I am wiating for some thoughtful debate on this topic. Since WMD and the question as to whether or not Pres. Bush lied about them is a major topic of discussion and a great concer to the Left. I though it'd be interesting to get some points of view on this.

So, what L'Opie is saying is that the President's comments are at the least untrue but were intended to "persuade" the American People to support his actions...???

Nope... because I want to see how the rest of the Monkeys feel about the President's statements in light of the recent testimony about the lack of clear intel on the Iraqi WMD program...

Well it seems to me that WMD could still be found, although it's not looking very good at this point. I think he mislead people to drum up support for the invasion, although one can not simply blame GWB alone for that. He made decisions based on the intelligence he was given. But he had ME convinced that huge stockpiles would be found, so I feel lied to about that.

To answer N8's question directly, "When the President said to the nation that "the mission was to attack Iraq's nuclear, chemical and biological weapons program," was the president lying?" NO, he didn't lie about the mission. That was his goal, although it does seem he was going after something that does not exist, or at least no where near the level he thought it did.

I think President Bush was acting on the best intel at the time and was merely stating what the intel community had been saying for a number of years. He didn't intentionally mislead anyone and the two quotes I cited back this up.

What I am tired of is the anti-Bush crowd yammering on and on about the lack of WMD's based on what we now know today (or at lest what we think we know anyway).

I think the best way to describe the situation is an analogy to our legal system... we had enough proof of suspicious activity to justify a warrant to search the premises and the person being served refused. In America, that's enough cause for the police to use enough force to go in and fulfill the search warrant.

Suppose the police tore the place apart and found nothing that the warrant was issued to find?

Well, in our legal system, too bad for the served.

The problem is, Iraq doesn't fall under our juridiction, so we really didn't have the "right" to go in on the amount of evidence we had.

With all that said, I still agree with the action.

Hum..... a lying President..??? No WAY!!

"...their mission is to attack Iraq's nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons programs and its military capacity to threaten its neighbors."

"And so we had to act and act now. Let me explain why. First, without a strong inspection system, Iraq would be free to retain and begin to rebuild its chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons programs in months, not years."

-President Bill Clinton, Address to the Nation*, December 16, 1998

*After he ordered military action against Iraq at the height of the Monica Affair.

Didn't Clinton know that Iraq had no WMD's?

Must be so much fun chatting to N8.
"VB- So N8 what did you get up to on the weekend?
N8- What did YOU do?
VB- Went for a ride, played with the kids, you know, the usual.
What about you?
N8- (Shows me newspaper article) According to this article on any given weekend 2.7% of male Americans play basketball.
VB- So that means you played basketball yesterday.
N8- I'd like to hear what LO has to say on that.
LO- Errrr...you played basketball?
N8- I see....anyone else have anything to add. I have another article here that comments on the sedentary nature of Americans in the 21st century
VB&LO (shouting)- So did you f*cken play basketball or what.
N8- I should think the answer to that question is obvious.
VB- (slamming head against wall) Make it stop, make it stop
LO- (throwing rope over the rafter) AAAAARRRRGGGHHHHHH, I can't take it any more.
N8- Hey guys according to this article I have about suicide......"

Either he was lying or being utterly and completely mislead by his cabinet. Either way, do we really want him as our leader?

the most creative thing i ve ever seen VB do was (in order of events)...

1) steal a lipstick from a girls purse in a crowded bar... actually he was rummaging through her bag while she looked on in amazement...
2) take the said lip stick and draw ALL over his face with it...
3) rip his shirt off
4) run and leap onto a pool table during a game, start writhing and groaning while onlookers were amazed by this half nude misfit with lipstick all over his head...

FVCK that was some funny shiat... i ll never forget that evening... no wonder the publican hated us

I am not saying Clinton was lying. He was operating under the same intel that the Bush administration (and the rest of the world) was.

Ok, that pretend conversation about what N8 did over the weekend was hysterical.

JDcamb -- you're just the last person I noticed to use it (so I don't mean to pick on you), -- is it just me, or is it misled?

It's not like the verb "to read" where past tense is read (but sounds like red). Lead's inflected form is led (and mislead's inflected form is misled). But maybe, there's been a shift -- anyone have a news article showing past tense of mislead as "mislead"?

Does it matter? He is solely responsible for the actions of his cabinet.

For a president running on a platform of "personal responsibility" he's doing a fantastic job of passing the blame.
