GOP leaders have singled out the fence as one of the primary accomplishments of the recently completed session. Many lawmakers plan to highlight their $1.2 billion down payment on its construction as they campaign in the weeks before the midterm elections.
However...

But shortly before recessing late Friday, the House and Senate gave the Bush administration leeway to distribute the money to a combination of projects -- not just the physical barrier along the southern border. The funds may also be spent on roads, technology and "tactical infrastructure" to support the Department of Homeland Security's preferred option of a "virtual fence."
"It's one thing to authorize. It's another thing to actually appropriate the money and do it," said Sen. John Cornyn (R-Tex.). The fine-print distinction between what Congress says it will do and what it actually pays for is a time-honored result of the checks and balances between lawmakers who oversee agencies and those who hold their purse strings.
In this case, it also reflects political calculations by GOP strategists that voters do not mind the details, and that key players -- including the administration, local leaders and the Mexican government -- oppose a fence-only approach, analysts said.

Wall bill was to satisfy Xenophobic voters, money will just be used for other things. It would be cool if they used the money to build border security robots with gatling guns and a particularly bad temper when it comes to hippies.

Can they make a version of that robot that will get rid of the ones that already made it thru?

Border security robots should be programed to stay in border area's. Of course there are national borders, state borders, county borders, town and city borders, property borders, migratory borders and Borders book stores. I would say only hippies on the deep ocean would be safe.

Do illegals really cost the country $1.2billion+upkeep?

I can see doing it if Mexicans were suicide bombing East LA, but that's a lot of money to spend on illegal immigration.

the twist.
you could create a lot of jobs with $1.2bill.

I'm sure a lot of hardworking folks will be employed in building the fence. And if they are like most construction sites in the Southwest all the employees will be immigrants. :busted: :bonk:

Like building a fence?
i was thinking something more productive and sustainable. even whaling would beat fence-building on that.
say a tax break worth 1.2bill in industries were low-income american workers usually work.

a fence is a one time deal, plus since its construction and mexicans rule construction, the added demand will likely be met by an increase in mexicans.
that is, assuming 1.2bill is substantial enough for the southern fence-construction market.

what, you were expecting lasting reform from this congress? just like their new policy of openess w/ regards to earmarks lasts only untill.... 12/31/06.

I still like my policy better. if these mexicans are willing to pay $10k each to smugglers to get them across the border, how about we let any and everybody in that wants to come in, but we charge them $10k for the priveledge. if 700,00 people are coming in every year, that equals 7 BILLION dollars. per year. that could fund one of the greatest tax cuts in the history of the US (or 3 small wars to be named later). :D

Do you have any idea what the budget of the US government is per year. Or any idea how much the war in Iraq is going to cost?

7b a year is a tiny drop in that bucket...

Hippies are idiots, and any chance you get to take a shot at those dred-wearing, pathouli soaked nutsacks, you take it. They are the scourge of the earth.
Hmm, a lot of negative energy I sence in your answer. Given in to the fears of the dark side you have...

I get your recentment of them is strong but I don't understand why. The're not that many of them here so I can only recolect that I've spoken to one. He was by far one of the two deepest persons I've ever met.

It's fashionable around here to bash hippies and christians.

Burley Shirley bashes everybody. So he's at least an equal opportunity hater in that regard. Although this week he does seem to have some sand in his vagina.

Christians only get bashed because the Big J was a hippie.

The only people that build fence in TX are from Mexico. I have known quite a lot of them and they are smart enough to be on our side of the fence when they are done building it. That would throw the government into a whirlwind.

A actual fence that big would need constant maintainence. Even before you finished it sections would need repair, if not replacement.
