So, what is the story for the 05 Mavic EX823?

the rim pictured seems a bit different than the ones I had - mine had a ridge on the sidewall and this one here seems to have a flat surface?

Why do I always get a blank yellow screen when ever I go to that link? Does anyone else have that problem? I have to use this to see their site: http://www.mavic.com/servlet/srt/mavic/home?lg=us

My EX 823's have the groove in them also.

I saw the 2005 catalogue and there a lot beefier this year. I think there about 620 grams a rim. There no longer the lightest rim they offer. The 721 or 521 whatever its called is now the lightest they offer at 590 grams. Also the 2005 deemax are still 28 spoke 135x10mm. No 150x12mm which is lame. THe only change is the deemax are yellow

Actually now that you mention it last year's 823 was listed as 580 grams, correct? This year it is listed as 657 grams. Put on a bit of weight and hopefully durability.

Actually the rim is very different, first off the eyelets are gone.

Since we are on the subject on UST rims, Did Sun have anything on hand at Interbike? I heard something about them having a UST DH rim.

I don't know if they have a UST specific rim but have you seen the STS rims listed on their site? http://www.sun-ringle.com/prods/mtbrims.html

Bottom two rims, the Singletrack STS and Mag 30 STS. Looks like they use some kind of specific rim strip.

So didn't mavic make the ex 325 to compete with singletrack/rhynolites, or other affordable durable rims? If that's the case why did they make it so heavy, 716 grams? I ask because isn't the singletrack only 590 grams or something? If they're trying to reach that market, wouldn't they try to match that weight? Just a thought, I could be wrong.

DT is offering a FR rim this year, 620g. Looks sweet, they will also have a tubless kit for the rim, kinda like a stans strip.

Yeah, I have seen those, but I have seen anybody use them.
Now, Michelin was running a Stan strips on a bunch of regular MTX rims, and they said it was working great.
But once you have tried UST with Michelins, it is just a no-brainer.
I could pop the tires on with my hands and some soapy water, and
inflate them everytime with a floor pump. No sealant, and no leaks all year.

I hear ya. I have been using the Michelins on my 823's and I LOVE how easy it is to get the tires on and off and air them up.

It would be nice if there were more heavy duty UST alternatives on the market.

The difference in weight for the 05 ex823 is because they are including the weight of the spoke adapters/nipples/whatever you call them, like they should have in the previous years. It is the same rim as always, per the Mavic rep visiting my LBS a month ago.

That looks identical to the rim I bought from Sun, with no ridge, which only lasted a few days at N* before flat spotting.

Not good news. I guess I won't be using Mavic UST rims next year.

I wish we could get a straight answer about the new rim...some say it's different, some say it's the same...

well maybe they just got rid of that machined strip, but kept the same extrusion.

what about those rims some people in-the-know were raving about the pros were trying this year? maybe its a new rim model all-together, and not a replacement?

Mostly cause I am bored, I just called Mavic and spoke to one of the customer service reps. According to 'Guy' the rims are expected in about four weeks and are suuposedly exactly the same. :mumble: I also asked about a 36 hole version and he said it would not be available. They are showing a 36 H on their site, wtf? What is wrong with this this company? Why change the DeeMax and not the EX823? :mumble: :mumble: :mumble: :mumble:

I also asked about any other similar UST rims they might be coming out with and he said the EX823 is the only one for DH riding. :eviltongu

well if that is the case I'm done with the waiting - I thought they were going to release new rims...I'm going to try to get some 721's to replace the 4 EX823's they owe me.

I got the same answer when I talk to Mavic a few months back. Didn't seem like they knew too much on what was going on.

I'm pretty sure that is the exact rim Carlos had and only lasted him a few rides - but might be because of a crappy wheel build?

Really? He had that rim for a while I thought. Glad I didn't build his last wheel;) I think the secret to keeping them dent free is LOTS of pressure.

I'm not sure if the rim I have is the same profile but it does not have a ridge on the sidewall. I was running 38 pounds of pressure and it still got dinged up after only a few rides.

All this information sounds kinda sketchy. That picture shows two different rim profiles but Mavic reps keep saying that there is no difference for 2005 so I'll probably stay away from 823s until everything gets sorted out.

oh that's true...that wasn't one of the wheels you build! Probably why it did lasted a little longer! ;)

I'm still down for trying UST rims again - but I won't lie and say that I'm concerned about their durability.

Probably the only way I've been able to get a full season out of my original D3.1/X823's with DT Revo's, I check mine regulary and retension when needed.

Riding style and build quality are everything.

Well I'll be the guine pig for you and Carlos, I'll try the new ones. They do look a lot beefier.

In the pictures posted above it seems the flat part of the rim where the grommets screw in is wider than the old rim.

Joe, does yours seem to have more flat area around the grommets? On mine the flat part is almost the exact same width as the grommets. The spoke holes are also in line with each other (not offset like most rims). How long have you had the rim with no ridge?

I don't have the rim in front of me, but if I remember correctly, I do believe the profile where the grommets screw in is more round like the picture of the 2004. I'll double check tonight when I get home. I got the new rim towards the end of August.

Maybe the reason for some of the confusion from Mavic about the new rim coming out is maybe because the new rim already came out. Maybe the rim Joe is on is the new style?

Edit: I just saw this so maybe not about the above:

don't think so...Mavic ran out of the old 823's, reason why I've been waiting since July for some replacement rims. They've been using "waiting for the new rim to come out" story since..

do you have some cheapo calipers of something, to measure the width, depth or dimension the whole contour?
