shame on him for not noticing any differences if thats the case

I did notice that they were round.

The only difference I noticed when I first got the new rim was that the ridge was missing but everything else seemed identical.

well i doubt that anyone has the new one since i just got a box of 20 of the OLD shape ones today! :dead:
I saw the new rim that a rep had and the ones at the show.
Those bunch of dik4's that work there have absolutely NO idea what is going on there! They are by far the most difficult vendor that we deal with.

For what it's worth, I spent some time checking out the Mavic display at IB and the 823 rim they had cut in half on display was the grooved sidewall version. What they're do exactly, I don't think anyone knows for sure.

Sun will not be producing their STS tubeless rims per se - they recommend the use of Stan's in their rims these days.

Now, is it spam if I link to Transcend Magazine to give a glimpse at the latest rim Stan and I have been working on? Beta prototypes are currently headed to some very accomplished and destructive riders and with any luck, the mass production will start flowing early next year.

will those be true UST rims with no rim-strip, ie. direct competitor to the lonely 823?

No. All rims will be supplied with a rim strip, it simply provides a better seal. I did see a couple of odd companies at IB that had licensed UST rim designs but nothing in the freeride/dh market.

well I'm going to ask for EX721's then - might not be UST, but they are light and strong!!
Yep, if they did not change that rim, then I will just run the MTX with the Stans setup. I don't have anything against the Stan's setup, I have just never had to use it. I know from experience the MTX rim is strong, so I will probaly give that a try.

I've had burping issues with stans...I'll just run good ol' tubes..

Jeremy, ive been using MTX with Michelins for 1/2 the season with a ghetto tubeless setup, and have never lost pressure. Just put BMX tubes on the MTX rims, cut them down the center and fold the outsides out, put tire on, put sealant in, inflate, and cut off remainder of BMX tube sticking out :thumb:

ya, ghettos great, ran that with my 521/321s. A neat thing too is the cut tubes had 'welded' themselves to the rim, so i could of changed a tire without cutting a new tube. Moved to the 823s instead tho.

Dispite all the issues I've had with the 823's I still love them.

mine have done ok, although the flat i got caused a yucky flat spot. I've gotten alot of spoke damage for some reason as well, but the rim is still fairly good overall, but could use a good truing.

watch out, your rim sounds like mine in the early stages. That spoke damage will progress. My wheels were so messed up you could just randomly tighten and loosen spokes yet nothing would happen

I have to run a Hadley on the F1 next year, and im keeping my king/MTX front wheel together. But I see a new MTX / New Hope hubbed wheelset for the hardtail as a christmas present to myeslf :D

That new rim is much stronger than the old one. If my friend is pinching Michelin DH tyres and rims hold still air, they should be enough strong

The old ones did too, I've only had one flat in the 3 EX823's I flat spoted this summer, holding air isn't the issue it's staying round.

Okay hopefully this will set record straight or not.
New rims are definately different. No matter what the rep says.

I was using the 823 all season - blew up like 4 or 5 wheels even the pro women on our team blew though a few. Then late season i got hold of the yellow ones youve been seeing cedric, minaar, fabian, and sam hill run. It is the new 823 - but just yellow to attract attention to mavic like they did with their d max awhile back.

The new rims actaully measure 825mm so they are a touch wider than '04 823's - but not as wide as old 321 or 729's - but mavic are calling them 823's again.

my yellow 825's are way stronger stiffer and seat the bead better than the soft flat spotting, splitting, cracking old 04 823's.

Now hopefully the new 05 823's are like my yellow 825's. -it has identical profile.
As soon as my shop gets some ill let you know.

BTW - nothing beats ust rims with Michelin UST tires. Makes you feel guilt free running the big meat.

SCARY

Not long enough
Not that it matters but I picked apair of yellow 823's (rims) out of pit garbage pile at Schweitzer. In perfect condition. Now I have the habit of going into garbage at races. But you end up with alot tires with varying amounts of tread.Oh and I think it's cool that some people are still running my "ghetto tubeless" setup long after I stopped.I keep gashing the tires open ,so,I'm done with it all.Although I keep coming back and trying to no avail.Must be cuz of my smoooooth style. So that's my gift to the Mtn bike world. And yes CBJ, I mentioned it again, cuznobody calls it "Scarys tubeless"system like they were supposed to. :eviltongu And it was a cool idea ,that actually worked
