Sheol is Jewish, although the use of Gehenna (sp?) refers to a present state rather than an eternal destination. There is a good amount of Jewish thought that one's death is an atoning sacrafice for all the wrongs one has done.

I'm surprised Mr. Sharon lived though the night to be honest.

Another belief in Judaism is that one will spend the afterlife viewing all the deeds they did throughout their life on earth, so if all you did was bad stuff, they would say that is hell (present state) for reliving all the bad things you did. On the other hand, if you spent your life striving to do good watching a "replay" of your life would be enjoyable......anyway I just thought I'd throw that in there as well.

All those afterlife beliefs are just so illogical. Why would you spend the rest of time reviewing/attoning/otherwise being rewarded for the 0.0000000000000001% of the time you spent on Earth? It's simply utterly illogical, and highly self centred.

No.

In fact the only thing you ever really need to worry about is if you're enjoying yourself enough.

If thats not your no. 1 priority for your life, you need to sit down and have a long think. No-one gets out alive, and no-one goes to their grave wishing they'd spent more time in the office.

What happens to us when we die? (Serious question) All I know is what the Catholic church taught me. Heaven and hell and all that. Andy, what do you think (based on your findings, research, etc) happens to us when we die/after life?

This is purely from the Christian/Biblical perspective, so I want to place that disclaimer first and foremost.

Personally I think when a person dies that has placed their faith in the God of Israel (notice I did not specifically say Jesus, which tends to ruffle more than a few feathers, I tend to leave the door open for Jews) they go to Heaven. Jesus speaks of Abraham and Moses both being alive, anyway. That said, when Messiah returns God will restore creation to how He orginally created it to be (no I don't believe in the rapture or the destruction of the earth) and those who are part of God's covenant people will be ressurected and live in this restored creation for eternity.

Let me clarify that I believe that through the work of Jesus we as Gentiles can become part of God's covenant people, we in no way replace those people (the Jews) they are God's covenant people, have been and always will be.

Anyway, that's my perspective on the Christian/Biblical "what happens when we die" question.

I agree, most of modern Christianity focus' on the afterlife and how one can "get there". The problem is this comes at the expense of living right here and right now, not just sitting around knowing that you won't get "left behind".

I am gonna start beleiving in Valhalla then and hope to become Einherjar. During the day we will train and fight, until we cut each other to pieces. At night we feast at Odin's side and our wounds are miraculously healed.

Seems to be a bit of a contradiction there. Not that it affects me in any way. :)

Yeah I never said I had it all figured out either...........LOL. That said I do make a distinction between Jews and Gentiles with respect to salvation.

Is that the only criteria? Plenty of artists were failures and plenty of pyschopaths successes on that basis.
So: Is making others happy as important as making yourself happy? I'd like to think in a vast majority of cases, making others happy helps makes you happy too.

Psychos are obviously a extreme example. A blanket statement like mine can only really apply to the middle ground. We need special disclaimers for extremities.

Were those artists not happy whilst actually creating their art? Artists are also often happiest whilst unhappy if you know what I mean.

Robertson says Sharon's stroke is God's punishment
The Associated Press | 5 Jan

The Reverend Pat Robertson says Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's massive stroke could be God's punishment for giving up Israeli territory.

The founder of the Christian Broadcasting Network told viewers of "The 700 Club" that Sharon was "dividing God's land," even though the Bible says doing so invites "God's enmity."

Robertson added, "I would say woe to any prime minister of Israel who takes a similar course."

He noted that former Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated.

Robertson said God's message is, "This land belongs to me. You'd better leave it alone."
