As the World Cup starts, conservative media declare war on soccer
June 11, 2010 4:06 pm ET

As the 2010 World Cup begins in South Africa, conservative media figures have seized the opportunity to attack the tournament and the sport of soccer. They have also used soccer as a proxy to attack President Obama and progressives.

Conservatives: "Obama's policies are the World Cup," soccer is "a poor man or poor woman's sport"
Glenn Beck: "Barack Obama's policies are the World Cup." In an extensive rant on the June 11 Glenn Beck Program, Beck purported to explain how President Obama's policies "are the World Cup" of "political thought." Beck stated, "It doesn't matter how you try to sell it to us, it doesn't matter how many celebrities you get, it doesn't matter how many bars open early, it doesn't matter how many beer commercials they run, we don't want the World Cup, we don't like the World Cup, we don't like soccer, we want nothing to do with it." Beck stated that likewise, "the rest of the world likes Barack Obama's policies, we do not."

Beck added "those who like the World Cup ... they're the most likely to riot," commenting that by contrast, "I haven't seen the baseball riots." He later said of soccer, "I hate it so much, probably because the rest of the world likes it so much, and they riot over it, and they continually try to jam it down our throat."

G. Gordon Liddy: "Whatever happened to American exceptionalism?" Discussing soccer's popularity in the U.S. on his June 10 program, G. Gordon Liddy asked, "Whatever happened to American exceptionalism?" Liddy noted that "this game ... originated with the South American Indians and instead of a ball, they used to use the head, the decapitated head, of an enemy warrior."

MRC's Dan Gainor: "Soccer is designed as a poor man or poor woman's sport," "the left is pushing [soccer] in schools across the country." Also on the June 10 G. Gordon Liddy Show, Media Research Center's Dan Gainor said, "the problem here is, soccer is designed as a poor man or poor woman's sport" and that "the left is pushing it in schools across the country." He added: "generally football games in this country don't devolve into riots or wars." He later added that the sport of soccer "is being sold" as necessary due to the "browning of America."

Mark Belling: "When you insult soccer you get the same reaction from soccer fans that you get when you insult an aging Democratic senator's hair." On the June 11 edition of the Rush Limbaugh Show, guest host Mark Belling said, "What I really want to do is make fun of the World Cup, but I'm not going to make fun of the World Cup because when you insult soccer you get the same reaction from soccer fans that you get when you insult an aging Democratic senator's hair, they go nuts and blow it up all out of proportion." Later in the program, Belling said "I haven't talked about the World Cup, I haven't talked about how they're force-feeding this down our throats."

So let me get it straight what Conservatives stand for:

Support BP over the people in the Gulf
Support banks over reasonable fiscal regulation
Hate soccer because the rest of the world likes it

Gotcha. Should be a great platform to run on in 2010.

something i'd like to point out here... world cup soccer is arguably more of an international to-do with more fans, more media coverage, and better ratings than the olympics.

anyone else catch Liddy essentially calling soccer players a bunch of head choppers?

re: becks comment about baseball riots. He obviously doesn't remember the 2007 World Series

I did think of the big difference between soccer and the big two American sports: football/baseball: socialism vs ownership.

In football, your goal is to gain yards on the way to a score. Even if you are unable to score, if you gain enough yards, it makes it very hard for the other team since they have to take back their yards before they can they are in your side of the field.

In baseball, the resource you are protecting is your pitcher's arm. The more pitchers he throws, the more worthless he becomes. So the better pitcher and his defense, the fewer pitches he throws, and the longer he lasts.

In both cases, you attempt to earn something, which is ownership.

But in soccer, with low scores and the capability of launching the ball across the field at any time, there are no possessions. No matter what you do, you can lose everything you've earned with one kick. That's socialism.

I see what your saying and realize its tounge in cheek, my question is do you think most of these wingnuts are even capable of thinking that deeply about it, or is this simply just another case of made up outrage?

Oh no, I believe that the outrage is very real. It's an outrage any ANYTHING different, anything that might smack of internationalism, anything that might disturb "real Americans". Just remember the amount of vitriol when it became apparent that Obama ate "arugula". Americans didn't eat arugula, they eat iceberg lettuce if they eat salad at all. They don't eat fancy-pants European food, they eat ribs, and McDonalds. They don't watch "soccer", they watch football and baseball, and grunt and spit while they do it.

It's 'merican, and if you don't like, leave.

Haters want to hate. The problem with soccer is that it is the world's game and these fools hate what the world likes.

I didn't like rugby until I saw Invictus. Mandela and Pienaar made it into a country-unifying sport.

BTW, I might not make a comparison of American sports to capitalism and soccer to socialism, but I have noticed there is less strategy in soccer compared to football and baseball.

Ding ding ding! Winnar!

I've come to belive quite firmly that a lot of this Right wing anger is about the loss of white entitlement. Old, fat, white guys are losing there grip on the world, aren't in charge anymore and goddamnit, there not going to take it anymore!

Nah. Who wants to watch a bunch of genetically stupid porchmonkeys jump around? No Jesus loving red blooded real American patriot, that's for sure.
what's the venn diagram of americans who follow nba -vs- soccer look like? tangent?

and since you brought up demographics, apply that to above. i would also dare to suggest the ratio of jesus lovers is higher among nba fans vice soccer

if you want to be on the nose, you might try for college football, which i believe is over-represented by fundies, esp since the 2nd coming of tebow

Thanks for the advice Silver, but I'm still not sold. After all, Russians love that game.

The strangest thing about soccer in the US is that almost every kid who is into after school sports plays soccer as their first sport but very few people stick with it. Soccer moms and mini vans were just after apple pie in American-ness last time I checked. So why the sudden hate?

Those are the good capitalist Russians. Besides the US beat them in hockey 30 years ago, and so the US is a better hockey nation anyways. No Russian blacks either, which is a huge net positive in the eyes of your average mouth breathing GOP racist...I mean voter.

Americans don't like Soccer for a couple of reasons. Reason #1 is that it sucks and is stupid. Reason #2 is that, since our best athletes actually participate in sports which don't suck, we get all these losers who couldn't make their highschool football team representing our country...and so we lose. Who in their right mind would want to watch that?

And yet...just in the past few years has Roger Goodell reached out to foreign countries about the NFL...

i think even a subpar soccer player is more physically fit than any football player.
It is apples and oranges.

Football players are built for explosive sprints and heavy hitting. Soccer players are leaner for the constant running and fancy footwork.

Your typical wide receiver/db could play soccer if they avoided the weights, but no soccer player could be a linebacker.

....or maybe Becky is all butt hurt because the world cup is getting better rating than he EVER has...

In the U.S., no stupid horn is slowing the World Cup ratings. Through the first weekend of the tournament, covering eight matches, ESPN and ABC averaged some 4,247,000 viewers per match, up 80% versus the first eight matches of the 2006 World Cup. Saturday's United States-England game attracted about 17.1 million viewers between ABC and Univision, the Spanish-language network (this total includes 13 million viewers on ABC, and 4.1 million on Univision). The game was the most-watched opening round World Cup broadcast ever.

I don't think you realize how big some of the soccer guys are. Watching the Greece Nigeria game today they mentioned the weights of some of the players, several of them were 220+ lbs. More weight-room and twinkies and they would be right there with a linebacker.

And none of them can skate.

Hockey ftw :)
