Paris bid to ban designer jeeps
Thursday, June 10, 2004 Posted: 5:59 AM EDT (0959 GMT)

PARIS, France -- Bulky, gas-guzzling sports utility vehicles (SUVs) could be banned from the chic but traffic-clogged streets of Paris within 18 months following a resolution passed by the city council.

Denis Baupin, a leading Green party councilor who tabled the resolution, says the designer jeeps are "not suited to towns" and he could not understand why people drove the fashionable "off-roaders."

"They're polluters, they're space-occupiers, they're dangerous for pedestrians and other road users. They're a caricature of a car."

Deputy Mayor Baupin said Wednesday that the resolution could lead to a ban on the increasingly popular vehicles in about 18 months if it is included in an overall project to improve traffic flow in the city.

"We have no interest in having SUVs in the city. They're dangerous to others and take up too much space, " he said on Europe 1 radio.

The city council voted to urge Socialist Mayor Bertrand Delanoe to consider banning SUVs, which have become increasingly popular and now make up about five percent of the French car market -- just below the western Europe average.

Baupin said Paris, which has been setting aside more lanes for buses and bicycles since a Socialist and Greens coalition took over City Hall in 2001, could not legally ban SUVs outright.

"Our idea is to limit the circulation of the most polluting vehicles," he said. "That means SUVs and lots of other vehicles that don't meet European pollution standards."

Plane include banning 4x4s from Paris city centre during peak pollution periods, and denying their owners residents' parking permits. Off-roaders could also be banned from protected areas like the Bois de Boulogne and the banks of the river Seine.

The proposal, certain to be opposed by motoring groups, follows similar remarks by the mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, who in May month described SUVs as "bad for London -- completely unnecessary" and called their owners "complete idiots."

Britain's Guardian newspaper reported a survey showing that just one in eight 4x4 drivers had driven their car off-road, and six in 10 never take it out of town.

The Guardian added that France caught on late to the vogue for SUVs, mainly because Renault, Peugeot and Citroen have not so far offered them.

But with luxury carmakers like Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Porsche selling plush leather-upholstered 4x4s, the vehicles are an increasingly common sight in Paris's wealthier quarters. Sales surged by 11 percent in France last year.

We've seen it all before..... you will drive this, not that, you will eat this not that, people with blonde hair and blue eyes are superior, get in the cattle car, etc. etc.

I fear the U.S. is headed down this same very path though all joking aside.....the last entity I want telling me what I can and can't do is the government. :dead:

"It was a funny angle!"
that is so rediculous....I lived in Paris for 6 months and saw a lot of motorcycles and cars with open exhausts......wonder if they are going to be denied parking permits.

what about the dozens of ferraris zipping around the city? I am sure they are ULEV (ultra low emmissions vehicles) :dead:

and I am sure that the Mercedez s600 is quite easy to park...

Uhh, Paris has traffic congestion problems... not just quanity of cars, but size of the streets. It's harder to manuever there than your typical US city.

I think it's the right move. The best move would be to shut Paris off to all private traffic... public transport and pedestrians only. And make the public trans FREE!

Why only jeep brand SUVs?
I think it is al SUV's of a certain size.

Like Coke can mean Pepsi in a restaraunt. If the waitress asks if Pepsi is OK....I don't care bring me a pepsi then.

Or better all zerox machines? or is it all copiers?

Jeeps are synonomous with Offorad SUV type vehicals.

???????

There are laws from preventing you from having a tire fire in your front yard, aren't there? Do you resent the gov't for taking away your god given right to burn tires on your land? There is a reason for that, you know.

If it's for the collective good of society, then why is it a problem? Euro cities tend to be a little older than US cities. They weren't really designed with cars in mind. America completely revolves around cars. Drive thru restaurants, Starbuck's, banks, pharmacies... and big ass, wide streets. Paris isn't like that.

If everyone drove Excursions there, it would be like everyone all of a sudden deciding to drive full size winnebegos here. It just ain't gonna work.

And if it ****s up the greater good, then that's just tough luck for you.

I understand that Paris has small streets, I lived there. BUT....if they are going to ban SUVs, they have to also ban all of the big ass bentlys, merc s600 limos, ferraris, and all those exotic cars that are not so exotic in Paris...these cars are just as wide as some SUVs, maybe not an H2 or an excursion but definitely a Cherokee or an explorer. I saw these cars there on a daily basis. I just don't like seeing laws that are hyporitical, they ban one type of vehicle when there are a lot of other vehicles on the roads that will suposedly cause the same problems.

Personally I would never own a car in Paris just because it is so expensive and there really is no need for it. I make fun of my girlfriend becasue she has a grand cherokee that has never even seen dirt. I think SUVs are a waste if you are not going to use them to their full potential and just want to "sit high in traffic". I would imagine that most SUVs driven in Paris will never see dirt just like the ones driven in metropolitan areas in the states.

I am not stading up for yuppies that want to look cool in an SUV, I am just speaking out against an action that I feel is hypocritical. If they said they would deny vehicles with a certain wheel base or width the parking permits I would totally agree. don't be hypocrits!!!!!!

now pardon me while I drive my H2 hummer to protest rising gasoline prices...

oh, i totally understand. i mean, the world is not like the US where a 4lane road is a minor road.

in fact, in lima small vans are already banned within the historical center. which in terms of space is pretty similar to old european cities.

the planning of cities like that is 500 years old, and there is no way on earth, anything bigger than a ford explorer would turn, without using the space 2 regular cars would.

driving a toyota echo i physically bump mirrors with the nissan sentra at the side. its already tight enough to fit 2 small cars. one H2 would clog the traffic.

Uh... are you really comparing a city-wide ban on SUVs to Nazi fascism?

Don't call it a come back
Come on this is totally antiAmerican legislation. If it were a logical law then they would do it like NASCAR or the bins at air line check in with a tape measure or stuff your SUV in this box please.
