One method is to cut up an old inner tube into a long strip about 3 cm wide. The wrap the chainstay as if you were using tape and secure each end with a zip tie.

I bought some velox tubular rim tape once by mistake. I asked for rim tape and didn't look at what the clerk gave me. Its a double sided sticky tape for holding tubular tires on to tubular rims. Anyway, I didn't bring it back because it looked useful. My bike has an elevated chainstay, Santa Cruz Superlight, so you only need to protect the underside. I opened up an inner tube, cleaned the talc off and stuck down two strips of the tape side by each with the backing still on one side, then mearly cut the tube with the tape on one side into an apropriate shape. Peeled off the backing paper and stuck it on. It seems to last quite a long time. At least as long as the aforementionned tube wrap.

But then if you go up a hill too hard you don't have a chain to worry about anyway.

hockey stick or tennis racket grip tape, it's sicky on one side with a tough top than conforms to any shape and it comes in a range of colours.
