scary stuff

The weather/rain didn't put too much of a damper on the bbq, everyone had fun and of course there was way too much food, BUT.........well Most importantly, everyone is safe. I have a outdoor fireplace on the back wall of my attached garage, and we got a fire going in it. It was nice to hang and be warmed by the fire..but by 11:00 or so everyone went home. Instead of going to bed, I decided to stay outside by the fire, and thank god I did ..just before midnight I noticed smoke inside the garage, I didn't know what was wrong until I went in the garage and saw the inside wall behind the fireplace was bright red! Yes, it was on fire. I went in and woke up Dennis , I called 911 and got everyone out of the house...The wall was ripped apart and the fire put out .....but I really think the house would have been gone if I just went to bed, and for me the scariest thing was Dennis's kids were sleeping in the house. (Dennis is my nephew and is staying at my house until he can move into the house he is buying, his 1 & 3 year old daughters & wife who live in Boston were also staying this w/e)

Thanks to Dennis (who used to be a volunteer fireman), the EG police and the Clinton Heights Fire Department I still have a house.

The cause of the fire was due to spaces between several of the back bricks (due to settlement).

like I said scary stuff

I'm glad everyone is ok Douglas. That is super scary. Had a chimney fire in an apartment once. How are all of the bikes? Looks like the road bike had a close call.

I didnt freak or was even scared at the time.......but afterwards, once it sunk in, and the thought of what potentially could have happened - scary & unnerving

and yeah the bikes are all ok, and I would have sacrificed the road bike to save the mountain bikes !

damn, that is scary. good to hear no one was hurt and property damage was minimal.

when we lived in boston one of the townhouses two doors down had its heat pump catch on fire, and the wind swept the fire across the rooftops, catching roof decks on fire. we were about to go to a memorial day picnic when i smelled smoke. luckily someone had already called the fire dept, and they came just as the flames got a lot higher on one of the buildings. we were wondering at that point whether we should run into our place and save stuff. it was not a fun moment, but the fire fighters got things into control very quickly and there was just some water damage in our building (the other building had a tougher go of it).

i never want to be that close to a house fire again, and that was pretty minor.

Dude thats sucks.

Good that you got the kids out first, but no mad second charge for the roadbike? It may be upset with you next time you ride it  I'd buy it a new carbon fork, or maybe some new bar tape of its favorite color to make up for that :monkey:

It doesnt look like it was a huge amount of damage, could have been a lot worse.

In strange happenings here... I had a dream Sat. night that was pretty odd... I was at a birthday party of some sort and someone whipped out this standard looking red white and blue cake... on the cake it said the name "Douglas" in big yellow letters. Me thinks the cosmos wanted me to save your bike :D

ALSO, where that wall is I had 2 shelves, with a bunch stuff on them including, oil, pool chemicals, a bunch of plastic....and about 4 ft from that wall was a big stack of newspaper, and about 6 ft was 3 containers of gasoline.....

What can I say man? I had a dream once that I was driving to work and my wheel fell off, put me in the hospital and I was in a coma...

Well I took my passport in to my old shop the next week to get it fixed (would stall out at like 70mph for no reason, turned out to be clogged cat-converter), the next day the shop calls me and tells me that the ball joints are so bad that they need to fix them first, there was a danger of the wheel coming of at high speed

Now that one freaked ME out..
