Tar grew from the nascent midwestern noise rock, which peeled off from punk. they started as fairly average punk bellowers in Blatant Dissent but started differentiating themselves from the generic hardcore crowd once their first "Play To Win" single came out. strong records would follow on well-known labels such as Amphetamine Reptile and Touch & Go, and they called it a day in '95 after releasing their finest record, Over and Out, expertly recorded by Steve Albini.
Tar's lone visual gimmick was the use of home-made aluminum-clad guitars, but it was a fairly accurate representation of their sound: metallic, clanging, seamless, brittle. they did the two guitar as one sound better than most. as a fanboy i consider all their stuff essential, but newcomers should start w/ either Jackson or Over and Out
