today's an early edition, and a well-known one...no need to introduce The Clash to most people, as their story is fairly well known. the fans took it upon themselves to create the slogan 'the only band that matters', and for a while that was dead on.
Sandanista! is an oft-maligned record, coming on the heels of the well received to the point of sainthood London Calling, and the fact that it was a sprawling opus covering 6 lp sides made it an easy target. by this point the clash were well beyond their punk days, and early NYC rap and dub were catching their ear, though the number of stylistic approaches on this were legion.
today's selection features some amazing lyrics from strummer, really capturing a mood of an old, forgotten veteran of WWII, now a homeless man, and the tales he told. great vocal trades between joe and mick jones too. an ignored track from the band, but rightfully one of their very best.
