today's matador band is that twee Scottish band, Belle & Sebastian. after bursting on the scene out of nowhere w/ their self-released _Tigermilk_ (copies of which were trading hands for $1000 before it was reissued), they quickly became the toast of the town for sensitive pop lovers everywhere. marrying a combination of gentle, mainly acoustic sounds w/ deeply probing lyrics in the best of the scottish tradition, and capped w/ stuart murdoch's fey vocals, it's not something that DRB or BrianHCM are gonna be playing in their T-Top camaros at full volume.

Not bad. Not sure if it is my cup of tea though.

How about some Big Country instead. I still like to listen to The Crossing from time to time. They way they made their guitars sound like pipes - I dug that back then and still do.

Ugggh. I always try to at least tolerate Belle and S, but never can.
HOW DARE YOU! B&S are the shizz! You don't deserve to live anywhere near Brooklyn!

lyrically they are ace:

it could have been a brilliant career
He had a stroke at the age of 24
It could have been a brilliant career
Painting lines in a school that was too well known
Painting lines with a friend that had gone before
She challenged everyone to a fight
But the prefects all backed down
And they ran her out of town
Cause she drank and swore and spoke
Out of turn, she was the village joke

She had a stroke at the age of 24
It could have been a brilliant career
Getting clients to finance her strategies
Filling time in on safeways on saturday
She wears the clothes of an emperor
But her paintings are a sham
And theyre going for a grand
When the dealers come to view
Do they ever see the real you?

He had a stroke at the age of 24
It could have been a brilliant career
Selling lies to the boys with the old dansettes
Pulling the wool, playing the fool, its no wonder that
He is dribbling spit tonight
And the one he sent away
Was the only one who stayed
With a spoon and a decent book
And you can tell by the way she looks he is sorry and resigned
As he wets himself for the final time
the stars of track and field:
Make a new cult every day to suit your affairs
Kissing girls in english, at the back of the stairs
Youre a honey, with a following of innocent boys
They never know it
Because you never show it
You always get your way
They never know it
Because you never show it
You always get your way

Have you and her been taking pictures of your obsessions?
Because I met a [boy] who went through one of your sessions
In his blue velour and silk
You liberated
A boy I never rated
And now hes throwing discuss
For liverpool and widnes
You liberated
A boy I never rated
And now hes doing business

The stars of track and field, you are
The stars of track and field, you are
The stars of track and field are beautiful people

Could I write a piece about you now that youve made it?
About the hours spent, the [worldliness] in your training
You only did it so that you could wear
Your terry underwear
And feel the city air
Run past your body

Could I write a requiem for you when youre dead?
She had the moves, she had the speed, it went to her head
She never needed [anyone] to get her round the track
But when shes on her back
She had the knowledge
To get her into college
But when shes on her back
She had the knowledge
To get her [what she wanted]
tame ape, for me the pinnacle of B&S is the _Sinister_ cd and the 1st three EPs. amazing. i thought they got sidetracked around the time of _boy w/ the arab strap_ but i do like the new one _the life pursuit_.

Yah, Boy With the Arab Strap really only had one stand-out tune, and that was the title track. I haven't heard the latest one, just the live stuff on NPR.com.

the star of track and field is one of the only songs I can get by the whiny voice and melancholy uber pop-ness of.
