the Jam were (rightfully so) a major band in their native england, yet americans were indifferent at best, at least large numbers of supposed rock fans. taking the work of pete townshend and his mod imagery as the cornerstone, paul weller and co melded the energy of punk rock and then also added tinges of soul and R&B into the blend. today's selection is from the b-side of "Absolute Beginners", and is another reason why 7" singles were so damn good; the b-sides were really an unexpected bonus, and song selection for lps and what got left off was a head-scratching experience.

i love the chorus of this song...weller's created a really wrenching sense of nostalgia and longing of days gone by and what might have been.
