of all the early grunge bands, Afghan Whigs were the anomaly, at least geographically speaking. coming from the rust belt (Ohio, specifically), they didn't have the same fir and sea foam to look at on their daily hikes like Tad Doyle, but the human condition, and general ****tiness of it, was readily available and made for good song content. singer Greg Dulli wallowed in this, and though the music gradually changed into rev'd up soul revue material, the torments and inner demons remained lyrically. they were one of the only early SP bands to also make a sizeable dent after graduating to the Majors...records like _Congregation_ and _Black Love_ are excellent examples of the form.

btw, the Whigs were the only band i've ever seen who had a Kevin Smith lookalike on bass.
