upstate NY isn't really known for much musically, but Mercury Rev was able to ride the coattail of shared membership/producer with the Flaming Lips to get some much needed recognition (though england was on the ball 1st, and labels like Mint Film and Rough Trade built the steam which eventually powered them to signing w/ a major label). the 1st two records are a different affair from the later stuff though, mainly due to the claustrophobic and neurotic tendencies of original singer David Baker, who left after the The Hum is Coming From Her 10". baker's singing wasn't totally up my street but he did influence the overfeel of the records quite differently from the songs which sprang from the pastoral psych pop mushroom patch they'd later till.

today's selection has a spine-raking moment using guitar effects which is unreal...hang on and enjoy the journey.

A truly j.macsis moment towards the end.

Squalls of distortion are great.
