I am thinking of getting one or two Sony Trinitron 520GS monitors. I read some stuff and heard something about some lines in the screen. Could some explain that? I found some 21" ones, but maybe I should get 19" ones if I do a dual setup.

All Trinitron models have one, very fine black line running across the screen. I've owned 3 and they all had it.

It won't interfere with anything, most of the time you won't even notice it, but if you look carefully, it's there. Forget about it, it's not a problem :thumb:

I've got a ViewSonic P220f that has 2 fine black lines running horizontally across the screen. I'm not sure if it uses the trinitron technology or not but it has the same symptoms, it bothered me at first but after a little while the lines become less noticeable, really I only see them when I'm in Word or something else that has a large white background.

Some actually have 2. 3" from the top and 3" from the bottom on a 21". They are some sort of registration line for checking the tube focus or something. It does get annoying at times however (I had multiple 21 and 22" trinitron tube monitors).

Ahh, yeah, I forgot to say, as sizes go up you can get more than one. My 17" only had one but the really big monitors can have two or even three. They're spaced apart at a regular interval.

You can Google the reasons why they are there, I can't remember. I thought it had to do with the manufacturing process but Transcend might be right.

From what I understand, the lines are there to help align this grid to the display and housing. I could be wrong though?

Sometimes I see people ask Why are there 2 thin black lines across my monitor?. Answer: That is because of the Triniton technology. So what is Trinitron besides a white background with two horizontal black lines?

Most monitors display pixels through round masks for the color dots. There are thousands of triangles of green blue and red dots. This type of tube is called "Invar tube". In Trinitron (and clone) tubes, the light sensitive dots on the tube are positioned in a vertical grid. The vertical alignment allows to put more pixels per inch (higher density) and thus the image is sharper and more color saturated.

Hey, I believe ya'... but you could tell me they're a plot by the porn industry to distract chronic masturbators and thus prolong the amount of porn they have to watch to get off, and I'd believe that, too.

I have a Sony G520 21". The lines are there but you stop noticing them after awhile.

Everything on that monitor looks kick ass.

I actually have a decapitation fetish, and was hoping the black line across the neck would add to the fantasy.

Thanks for the info. I think I'll just get one 21" for now... and maybe later get a second one.
You need a BIG desk for even one. I have an old school giant desk from a bank and one 21" monitor fills it up nicely. Two is overkill unless you are into CAD or graphics work professionally.

I have a 3'x6' desk, so it should be fine if I make some room. I'll be doing photo (not quite pro yet) and video stuff on it.
Dude, you clearly haven't seen one of these monitors. A 3'x6' desk is nowhere NEAR enough room for two of them. As it is, to just gain working room for ONE of them you're going to end up pulling your desk out from the wall.

Nah, I've got one sitting on my desk right now, it'll take 2x3 for just one. The desk space mine is taking up is about 2x2 I've got a desk with much more space than 2x2 though. If that were all the space I had I'd be very uncomfortable. I doubt you'll get 2 on a 2x3 desk unless that's all you've got on the top of the desk, no speakers, no web cam, no telephone, no alarm clock, no text books, nothing. These things are 18+ inches just across the front of the monitor, that's 36 inches side by side. In case you failed your math classes in 3rd grade that's 3 feet, which equals every last inch of the space on your desk.

After a few drinks, I stop noticing EVERYTHING!

Actually, it's a small trade off for he quality picture you get.

Re-read his post about the 3'x6' desk and then re-do the math. Two of those will work, just not alot of extra room.

Man I don't know how I got 2X3 out of 3X6. Yeah it will work, but you might want more depth depending on how you have your desk setup.

I'm just going to go with one. There should be room for speakers and everything. I can always pull the desk out a few inches. How long is it?

I got a vga-vga cord for my monitor. After buying it, I realized it's for 17" and under. My friend said I should get a dvi cord. I have a dvi-vga adapter. Does the monitor size matter for a cord?

WTF??
Kill your friend in the neck.

If it's a vga, use a vga. If it's a dvi, use a dvi.

You'll know that it works if the cable fits. They aren't interchangeable.

Actually, 2 friends said that I should use dvi...:bonk::bonk: I need new friends.
This cord is for monitors smaller than 17". Does it make a difference?

You can only use DVI if both your video card and your monitor support DVI. You can't just decide to use DVI because it's better.

I've never heard of a VGA cable spec'd for a monitor size. You can buy cables that are shielded better for longer distances or to ensure interference isn't as noticeable at super high resolutions... Did you swallow the pill the guy gave you? Did he sell you on rust coating? ;)

Take a picture of whatever makes you think the cable is for a 17" or smaller monitor and post it up. You have to be misinterpreting something...
It's like saying "This square taper bottom bracket is only for 17" bike frames or smaller..."

I'm not...:p

It's this one: http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=14676.

On the back of the box it says:
"This Belkin PC monitor cable connects a PC to VGA or SVGA monitor. Designed to work with monitors smaller than 17", this cable can also connect switchboxes that require a straight through, male-to-male monitor cable."

You can only use DVI if both your video card and your monitor support DVI. You can't just decide to use DVI because it's better.

hahaha, a rust coating... That would be perfect for my spring! :lighten:

Well, that's what it says... I don't want to open it if it won't work well.
