So the retarded dickheads in South Dakota are trying to force a high court reversal on Roe vs. Wade by locally banning abortion.

American Theocracy takes a step closer... You guys are SOO lucky to have a Supreme Court populated by the personal picks of a religious sub-moron.

US state tightens abortion laws

A US state has signed into law a bill banning most abortions, in a move aimed to force the US Supreme Court to reconsider its key ruling on the issue.

The South Dakota law - approved by the governor on Monday - makes it a crime for doctors to perform terminations.

Exceptions will be made if a woman's life is at risk, but not in cases of rape or incest.

Many believe new appointments to the Supreme Court may have tipped the balance in favour of anti-abortionists.

Both Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito are considered conservatives.

Justice Alito is thought to be more likely to rule against abortion than his predecessor, Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.

The supporters of the South Dakota law say they want to trigger a battle over the 1973 Roe-versus-Wade ruling, in which the US Supreme Court established that governments lacked the power to prohibit abortions.

'Vulnerable and helpless'

About 800 abortions are performed each year in South Dakota. Planned Parenthood, which performs abortions in the state, has pledged to challenge the measure in court.

Under the law signed by South Dakota Governor Mike Rounds, doctors could get up to five years in prison for performing an illegal abortion.

Gov Rounds said: "In the history of the world, the true test of a civilisation is how well people treat the most vulnerable and most helpless in their society.

"The sponsors and supporters of this bill believe that abortion is wrong because unborn children are the most vulnerable and most helpless persons in our society. I agree with them," he said in a written statement.

Court costs

The abortion ban would take effect on 1 July but it is likely that a federal judge would suspend it during any legal challenge.

The law would therefore not take effect unless South Dakota state gets the case to the US Supreme Court and wins.

Gov Rounds said abortion opponents have already started offering money to help the state pay legal bills for the anticipated court challenge.

Lawmakers also said an anonymous donor has pledged $1m (£572,000) to defend the ban, and a special account has been set up to accept donations for legal fees.

The statement issued by Gov Rounds also noted the bill was written to ensure existing restrictions on abortion would be enforced during a legal battle.
Fvckin idiots.

I'm not sure what I am more pissed about... the loss of womens rights or the fact that I am going to have to listen to my wife ranting about this for the next few months.

It's interesting to read about South Dakota in newspaper A - and then turn around and read about Holland legalizing baby euthanasia....Holland sounds a touch more advanced in their thought process methinks -

If God didn't want that little girl to live out her short life in agonizing pain, then he wouldn't have given her that skin condition. Who are we to question his wisdom?

I'd much rather just say "No!" then have to think about it at all...

Maybe she was a "test" to see if people have figured out what is a humane death versus a torture filled life?

Me thinks we should terminate the Medicare system. If God wanted people to live forever, he never would've invented "old age." Why should we prolong the inevitable?

Nah. Not letting the girl whose throat lining tears off when they try to feed her scream and live in horrible agonizing pain makes the baby Jesus cry.

You moral relativists... :(

Anyone who supports this should have to sit down in front of a woman who has just been raped and has become pregnant, and tell that woman that she has to carry the baby to term. Anyone who can do that is just plain vile, and anyone who can't shouldn't be supporting this bill.

Maybe the people of SD should get serious about really reducing the number of abortions (b/c and family planning services for the most poor for instance) instead of these "hail Mary" attemps they are throwing at the supreme court.

Jr. B.......it's nice to see you back.

As for the baby euthanasia...........I hope that is a decision I never have to make.

My sister used to live in South Dakota. One of my neices told me about people getting beat up for bringing Harry Potter books into school. Can't have the devil's witchery walking around unchecked.

South Dakota is obviously a lovely tolerant place. I'd vacation there if it didn't stink of cow and pig ****.

Interesting you mention this circumstance.

My wife was raped when she was 18, she grew up in a very strict Christian home and community (not like Amish strict) but very conservative and rural. Her home life was such that if she had told her parents that she was pregnant (which she was as a result of the rape) they would have essentially been kicked her out of the house. So as a scared 18 yo girl she had her older brother drive her 3 hours to St. Louis to the downtown planned parenthood to have an abortion.

[disclaimer: I'm not saying this is what every rape victim should do, I'm simply sharing a relevant experience] to this day she struggles with the decision she made. If things had been different with her parents, (some 18 years after the event) she would have rather carried that baby to term and given it up for adoption. She has said on multiple occasions that she needed someone to encourage her that she had more than one option with the circumstances she was in.

IMO I wish more pro-lifers would be more proactive about adopting those babies and taking care of those scared young girls, rather than blow all their energy on crap like going to the supreme court and standing outside planned parenthoods and yelling at those girls and treating them like they are whores or less than a person because they’re contemplating an abortion.

Very well said.

I am sorry about your wife, Andyman. No one should ever be put in a position like that.

KO - another fun perspect/opinion/fact (whatever) about abortions. How likely is it that "banning" them will actually see an actual drop in the # of them that occurs - if a kid wants to get one, they'll just go out of state:

Thus my admonition to my Christian brothers and sisters to actually do things to reduce the number of abortions rather than this "hail Mary" pass of a bill passed by SD.
