Spinning is a great example. Its been in Milwaukee since the 90s, but its still one of the most popular workouts - especially when February rolls around at the WAC. They started their first Karaoke Spin class in February of 2000. Otto read an article in a fitness magazine detailing the idea. Granted, the article was written in California, but WAC still implemented the Karaoke Spin before the innovative Crunch gyms.
Otto does admit that she had to kind of force-feed it to her class the first time. "The members all thought that it was going to be like you see at the bar-them up in front of everyone singing in the spotlight," Otto says. "In actuality, the lights are dim, the DJ has the mike and its a group singing thing."
The DJ gives the instructors a copy of the songbook ahead of time so they can make a list of requests. "Its kind of like a wedding where its pre-mixed," says Otto. The instructor gets a night off and also gets to sing along and help motivate the group. The DJ plays the tunes, sings along and offers prizes to the best participants.
Once the members realize that they know the words and that no solos are expected, they really get into it. "Proud Mary" by Tina Turner is a group favorite. "Everyone is screaming it out and suckin wind because its so fast," says Otto.
Along with the physical benefits of spin such as burning fat, building strength and increasing cardiovascular health, Karaoke Spin "is fun and makes people excited about something in the blah of February," says Otto.
"People also get to know each other through their musical and fitness interests and the class just flies by." Otto adds, "Fun is our theme. Were constantly coming up with silly things to keep members motivated."
So, whats the next step in keeping spin classes fresh and exciting? Group exercise instructor for the WAC-Downtown branch, Noelle Stehling, held a Sensual Spin class for Valentines Day last year. Candles were lit. Chocolates were placed on each bike. The instructors motivational terms used for visualization can be interpreted as being a bit seductive. Well leave it at that.
