Quick question concerning spoke length. I'm a novice and ready to dive into
my first wheel build.

The online calculator gave me an answer of 256.5mm

Does that mean I'm safe to go with 256mm spokes? Being I only
see them sold in 2mm increments. Is 256 better than 258?

Thanks

When I size my spokes I usually go with the "what is it closer to" method. 256.5 is closer to 256 than 258. If you have a relativley shallow rim, then you should be fine with the 12mm nipples and the 256 spokes. If you're rim is deep, then I'd go with the 256 spokes and 14mm nipples.

Good luck on your build. I know my first wheel was a near disaster, but you get better with practice. What helped me was keeping another rim nearby that I can compare my spoke pattern to. I got it down now but when I did my first build, I was easily confused.

don't make me kick your ass
Before building with new parts, take apart an old wheel and build that. That way, you don't mess up good parts. This will give you good practice on wheel building. I also recommend Jobst Brandt's book, "The Bicycle Wheel". I learned to build wheels from this book. It gives a lot of theory and why to build the way you do.

Not really.

Dt spokes, for example, are about 1mm shorter than spokes, like Wheelsmith.

One thing that will help if you list the hubs and rims as well. Others can confirm your lengths.

Good to know. I've only built with wheelsmith spokes and nipples, so if I ever have the coin to build with DT spokes, I'll make sure to adjust my measurements.

That would be great.

If anybody could confirm or come up with the correct answer, that would be highly appreciated.

I'm just focusing on building one rear wheel for now.

Now, what I did was take the measurements right off the hub and entered them into this calculator http://www.bikeschool.com/spokes/

hub: Eastern 36 hole single speed rear hub. 135mm spacing.
from the measurements, it appears to be equally flanged from center of hub.

rim: 26" Halo SAS
with ERD OF 538mm

I don't have the hub here with me now to list the dimensions I came up with the other day but hopefully this info is enough. If not, thanks for checking anyway.
