Ok, I've tried wiping them down with paper towel stuff, spraying the caliper/rotor with water, putting dirt mud and grit in there, but nothing will make my avid stop squealing like a biatch. Is this something that will actually go away with break in period?

I did not have any squeal when I first got them, but after my first hard ride I noticed it, and it can wake the dead. What can I do!???

I'd say that you should just give it time. Disc brakes are squeaky, that's all there is too it. The squeak will probably go away after riding them for a while, but I don't know of anything you could do to speed up the process. The only thing I can think is that you might have done something to the pads (got something bad on them), but other than that, I don't know.

My Hayes will start squeaking constantly out of nowhere once in a while. My solution........ride the brakes down a long downhill to get em nice and hot. Usually takes care of the problem.

I'm doing that right after school today. My metric set dissapeared so I gotta bear with em till I ride down to the LBS. thanks guys!

If your alignment is good it means you've glazed the pad. Get some silicon carbide abrasive paper(the kind you use for wet sanding). Put the sheet on a flat surface. I have a 6x4" steel plate for this. A couple of figure 8's(water optional), wipe them down with a clean(that means new clean, NO OIL OR GREASE), and install. Works every time for me.

i know this is an old thread but, is it OK to use rubbing alcohol on the brake pads? I use it for the rotors but is it OK for the pads? will this stop the disc brake 'death squeak'??

somewhere really ****ty
whenever i put rubbing alcohol on my pads it kinda seems like they have to break in again but not any realy time at all. they just dont have all the power immediatly after you put em in. my brakes have never squeeked but i have put rubbing alcohol on em cause sometimes im careless with grease and oil and just makin sure there isnt anything on there.
