$140 for a 400g steel cassette is stupid, Though steel rings are smart to use for the bigger cogs. The rear derailleur is also too expensive. Then you add in the cost of the XD driver... I can only see this group making sense for folks who are buying a new bike that comes with it, or people with SRAM 11spd groups who need to replace worn out parts. I am patiently waiting to see what lower priced 11spd options Shimano will be introducing shortly.

It only seem cheap because the price of the new groups has been astronomical.

That.

The XX cassette is a work of machining art. I can look at that thing and get why it's so damn expensive.

I'm still using 2x. I'm really looking forward to the 10-40 Praxis Works cassette and could conceivably go 1x using a 32/10-40 if I just sacked up. Am I the only person left who doesn't think having 2x and a front derailleur is such a negative thing??

I had the same thought about it not being that cheap, but my other option, a decent 10spd cassette, plus a 40t cog comes out at least the same. Advantage I see is being able to have the 10t, possibly opening up a wider range. yeah, the driver sucks to buy, I figure that's going to be more ubiquitous soon, as well, especially with this whole GX thing.

It's definitely not terrible, I just like simplifying the bike as much as possible, especially with the added complexity/ weight/ cable nest that comes with a dropper.

It's a lot of money for a fancy 11 speed cassette, when you can get an all manner of road cassette for half the price with the same number of cogs...

I like having the front derailleur for both the suspension effect and the ability to just bail out into a climbing gear, but I may go 1x if I can find the right chainring for my setup. I'd probably rather optimize for the climbing gear and sacrifice the top end, then just swap chainrings if I'm going someplace where the sustained speed will max out my cogset...but I find it hard to believe that people are getting a ton of use out of that 10s cog if they are produro racers.

That's funny. I first went 1x because the pedal feedback on my first gen Spitfire in the small ring drove me nuts. Haven't looked back.

Goodness knows we don't agree on A LOT of bike setup stuff though.

dats true, but different strokes...I ride a 29er so I need smaller cogs to get the same ratios you do, and the enderpo is not designed with the same properties as the spitfire...your 32t cog is probably the same as a 24t on my bike. I'm also riding trails that are mostly flat with short ups and downs, and I'm guessing you're riding stuff that's more prolonged. I need to turn a corner and be in the granny then 40ft later be back in a 32x20 or whatever.

ok, Interloc (IRD) makes a 10-speed 11-40 or 11-42 cassette that works on a standard non-XD Shimano cassette body.

edit: but, more expensive than a 11-36 + 40t cog conversion. oh well.
