Hello, im fairly new to this site but i was wondering if any one knew how you could run the cable through the shifter to install a new shifter. I took the cable out of the housing and im trying to run it through the top piece and out of the lever, but i cant seem to bend the cable enough to get it out of the shifter, has anyone else had problem?

Are you trying to put the cable in or take it out?

You need to take the cover off the shifter. Unscrew the x shaped aluminum bit on the top of the shifter, then pull the cover off. Once you've done that, it's pretty obvious what you need to do. One thing I've found that helps when getting cables in is to do it in steps. Shift the shifter so that it is set in a position where it would be pulling a bunch of cable, if there was a cable installed. So click the aluminum lever a few times. Then thread the cable through the piece that holds the cable end, and then go out through the barrel adjuster once you've got it set in its stop. Doing it in two steps makes things easier.

My new X.9 gave me problems as well. For some reason I don't remember my 06 or customer's 2007 SRAM shifters being this problematic. My hint is to give the tip of your shift cable a slight bend with needle-nose pliers before trying to put it through the shifter (assuming you're using good welded-end cable, otherwise they will fray all over). If you pre-shape the tip of the cable into the shape of the red plastic part you initially push it through, I found that putting it in becomes MUCH easier.
