I've been using the yellow tape on my flows but am thinking of swapping to the rim strips instead.

Main reason being I've recently had to replace a spoke (stick in wheel) so had to remove the tape in order to get the new spoke in and have no more yellow tape. The rubber strips would be reusable where as the tape is not.

Any advantages the yellow tape has over the strips? Other then it maybe being a a few grams lighter?

It's a little lighter, and it's a little easier to seat a tire with it. On the other hand, it's more prone to burping, and isn't reusable.

I say stick with the Yellow tape, thats what the wheel was designed to be using. If you cant get the yellow tape to seal, then your probably forgetting to clean the wheel completly, or your not pulling it tight enough.

I've had issues with certain tires and yellow tape on my Flows. Most have been fine, but I can't make singly ply High Rollers stay seated.

Didn't have a hard time getting them to seat, but I've had the single ply kevlar highrollers blow off the rim. At the same time.- with ghetto tubless- which is usually better at reducing burping. I'm not going to be running those uber- loose xc style tires for anything except xc. Too baggy.
I haven't had a chance to try "the special yellow rim tape":p. But I do like the concept, although I'll probably try the duct tape way first.

That's what happened to me too.

I've never had issues getting tires to seat with the yellow tape, it's just the reusable bonus of the strips thats got my attention. Mind you the tape is cheeper so I guess I'll just stick with that. Thanks.

Which SP High Rollers have you guys had issues with? 2.35 Kevlar non-UST? I have a new bike on order, and 2.35 High Rollers are in the build kit- I was planning on running them tubeless on Crossmax SX's.

I think I'm right in recalling that the bead of the Stans rims was designed specifically around the yellow tape; that's how they got the ultra low profile and super rounded hook. I have a set of these as well, but I can't see how a traditional stan's rimstrip would allow the rim hook enough room to catch the tire bead properly. I would suspect it would blow off more during rides, if not immediately during inflation. Sorry if this is blunt, but I would stop being cheap, and just buy a roll of the yellow tape? How often do you break spokes?

I think I asked Stan's the same thing when I first got my flows and was setting them up. They told me the same thing Banshee Rider said. It's theoretically possible, but because the sidewall on the rim is lower, it would be so tight that getting the bead to seat would be almost impossible. ymmv.

if replacing one or two spokes, just cut a hole thru the yellow tape w/ a sharp knife, replace the spokes, and then get a piece of tape (I use the leftover yellow tape that's on the end of the roll, but you can also use any reinforced tape e.g. the strapping tape w/ the fibers in it) a few inches long to cover the hole.

stan's rubber strips are for converting traditional rims and focus on the bead sealing aspect. they are not rigid in the area of the spoke holes...if you run stan's rubber strips with no tape over the holes, then the air pressure in the tire is going to push the rubber strip into a domed shape on each spoke entry hole. not ideal.

Last week, I had to replace a broken spoke with the yellow tape on my rim, and I just carefully pryed it away enough to get the spoke out and a new one in, then put it back. It still works fine.
I used a rounded metal tire lever to hold it in place while I changed the spoke out.
Its not reusable, but it is ghetto reusable.;)

It's not being "cheap" when I was looking at a product that is more expensive then the yellow tape. Seeing as Stans makes strips designed for their flow rim it seemed like a pretty reasonable idea to ask about it before ordering more tape.

I don't break spokes often, this was the first on on this wheel.

Thanks for the help folks.

I was completely unaware of this, I checked out the site and your right, my apologies. I was always lead to believe that Stans rims = yellow tape because of the shallow bead hook they make such a racket about. However, if there is a alternate removable rim strip designed for the rim by the manufacturer, and you don't want to keep the yellow tape on hand, then go for it. :thumb:
