Star fangled nuts & 1.25" steerers

I had the genius idea to convert my old Cannondale m400 to a trials setup. Swapped out the cantis for v brakes, new bar. I'm trying to switch back to the rigid fork too, but ran into a problem or two. Its a 1.25" headset. So I'm stuck with the stock stem. Fine. Today ran into another problem. The star fangled nut is in the suspension fork....but not in the rigid fork. I think the shop that put the susp. fork on for me pounded the nut out the bottom of the rigid steerer tube and reused it. Is this possible? I don't have the susp fork here to look and see if there's anything in the way at the bottom that would keep the nut from going all the way down & out.

There's nothing at the bottom of the steerer to prevent one from pounding the startnut all the way down and out. Re-using the startnut is another issue: you can do it, but if you don't "re-flare" the flags on it, it might not give much "grab" on the new steerer. Often, driving the nut all the way through compresses the nut --especially when you get to the bottom of the steerer where it's butted thicker and may be narrower inside.

What I'm going to do is get a long bolt and washer, put that through the entire steerer, and use it to compress the bearings. Shop guy suggested it, and its much better than my idea of trying to use a clamp.

Once everything is tight you can just pull the bolt out, but you probably knew that. Also, Cycle Loft in Burlington has had a bunch of C-Dale reducer parts kicking around for years if you want something new.

Why don't you get a set of problem solvers 1 1/4-1 1/8 reducers and use a burly cro-mo fork? Or get a Kind Devolution headset, it presses into 1 1/4 headtubes and fits 1 1/8 forks. Plus if you choose either of these options you can run any current stems/forks out there.
