Steerer Tube Replacement

My riding partner bought a used fork without knowing how to correctly check the steerer length for a double crown fork. Coincidentally, he now has a newly rebuilt fork that doesn't fit his bike and the maker of the fork is no longer in business. He really likes the fork and would like to make it fit, but doesn't want to spend more than $50 to make it happen.

Any suggestions? Would prefer to find a place locally, in Northern CA.

It's an old dirt works fork. Here's an insane idea that he did when his Psylo steer tube came up short on the new frame, yes, I will teach him how to read a tape measure when it is all said and done :D, but he took a small piece of steer tube from another fork and had it welded onto his Psylo. I was really skeptical, but I saw it take an 8' drop with no problems, and yes even the crappy fork!!!

Do you think this is a good option? Especially on a Freeride bike? He is 3/4" short, meaning the new piece of steer tube will only be about a 1/2" into the stem.

Are you knowledgeable in Inbred bike mechanics? :p

personally i wouldnt even consider that an option....
imagine taking drop and the steerer tube just snapping....that can lead to some pretty seirous damage...not worth the risk...

but yes, teach the man how to use a tape measure...
