If you were gonna buy a new stem today, what would it be? Bare in mind this would be a short DH/FR style stem, and that you can use shims to run a 25.4 bar on a 31.8 stem. thanks guys

Ive never really thought about it that much, but for alittle while I was thinking that my next bar-stem purchase was almost deffinately going to be 31.8 but I never really thought about the loss of vibration damping. I guess for me the final decision would be if I can find the right feel in the cockpit that Im looking for (stem length, bar height and width; all while maintaining a rake and sweep that Im comfortable with)
I really like the rakes and sweeps of pro tapers but I dont like the width and rise height limitations with them. I like a really low rise, but really wide bar and its hard to get the right feeling for me with pro tapers. Ive been running eastons lately because theyve got really low rises with really wide bar options.

Don't Eastons and protapers have the same bend!?

ive been on both sizes. I had some 31.8 holsfeller bars on my bike in 03 and i could notice they seemed stiffer when compared to the normal bars. However this coming year I will be back on 31.8 bars because SIC is going to make a 31.8 bar/stem combo :D

given that you can use shims i would go for the 31.8, seems the most logical seeing as you could use almost ANY bar you'd choose
Do you know any place that sells the needed shims?

Thanks everyone for the quik replies I might add!

not sure of any place online, but any shop should be able to order them, as most distributors carry them. They're cheap too, no more than $7-8 tops.
