Lee, Its Doug (Brandon's friend). Its good to hear that he's doing alright. After hearing about his skillz at Durango I was pumped to watch him rip it up. I was bummed to see him laid out on those jumps. BTW, it was nice to meet you and put a face with the stories. Congrats on the 6th place finish.
Thank God he is OK. As bad as he looked when I arrived on scene I thought it would be alot worse. I think Susan Ramos my girlfriend's mom is one of the surgens working on Steve. She is an awesome doctor.
Yeah, I'm still confident wearing my TLD lid. Best injury prevention for any rider is the gym. Muscle absorbs impacts and keeps things where they are supposed to be.

I know that. On Lee's site Steve said he was lucky that he built up his back muscles, and they helped lessen the impact. Otherwise he might have been paralyzed.

As somebody who takes his physical conditioning seriously I can say Steve's gym routine this winter may have indeed saved him from worse injury, his lower back routine was nuts!
Now if only my parents didn't find out...they sat me down and told me to give up racing...
too bad Consumer reports doesn't crash test downhill and moto helmets for safety rankings. Then somebody could brag that their helmet was the "Volvo" of helmets, rather than the "Smart Car" alternative.
I don't care what anyone says, with downhilling as fast as it is anymore there is no reason not to where a moto helmet that is SNELL and DOT approved. I love the look of the D2 and I would ride it for 4X anyday but for DH, there's no reason not to have the DOT sticker on the back of the helmet.
..let's cease the thread hijack of Steve's tragedy. James@Go-Ride had a pretty good thread about this topic. If we discuss the helmet thing anymore, it should be in that thread, not here.
back on topic, it's really sad that Steve so messed up. It doesn't matter to me what type of helmet/pad/protection combo he had on. What matters to me is that the guy has a full and healthy recovery. I have constant pain from little nagging injuries and surgeries that I worry about affecting my mobility late in life.
I feel for him because this is such a massive trauma compared to anything I've had happen. Again, God bless you Steve. There's an angel on your shoulder! Best wishes.
GREAT NEWS!!! I just got off the phone with Steves mom. Mimi said that Steves spinal surgery was a 100% success!! The surgeon stated that Steve will soon be ready to do anything he wants. I spoke with Steve for only a few minutes, hes a little doped up at this time. Steve and his mom want to thank everyone for all the positive thoughts and prayers. Steve is scheduled to be release from Washoe Medical Center in Reno this Sunday. He will be recuperating at his parents house in California.

Sweet.
That is awesome.
If that dude is as wired up as he appears, he is gonna need one of you guys around him all the time to keep him from doing crazy shat until he is healed.
I witnessed him first hand at Yard Sale this year before they closed it off.
Pure balls.
I hope his recovery goes as well as his surgery. Good Luck.
